In Southern California, our summer lasts from May to September. At times, the heat is unbearable. Luckily, the beach or a body of water is never too far away. Since my daughter is out of school, I like to make sure we have plenty of fun activities for her. This summer our littlest will be ready for the baby pool and some water fun. To keep kids busy, here are 10 mom tested activities for summer.
10. Texture Painting
Grab some long grass, sponges and toy cars to make a fun texture painting. Get a big piece of paper and pour some washable finger paints onto plates with raised sides. Then, let your little ones make a masterpiece.
9. Kite Flying
Grab your favorite kite and go kite flying. Choose a day with a nice breeze so that your kite can really fly. For a fun craft, you can even try your hand at making your own. Here are some instructions on how to make one out of a plastic bag.
8. Popsicle Making
Using a popsicle mold, whip up some of your favorite homemade popsicles. Puree some blueberries or other fresh fruit and layer with yogurt. Pour in fruit juice for a refreshing treat. You can even make mini pops with an ice cube tray and popsicle sticks.
7. Water Balloon Toss
Put on your bathing suits and fill up some water balloons for a grand time. Each time a team makes a successful throw, they should take a step back.
6. Sandcastle Contest
Head out to the beach or local park sand box for a sandcastle contest. Bring plenty of shovels, buckets, sand molds or even plastic cups for a lot of variety. If you don’t have water source, make sure to bring some to get the sand wet.
5. Plan an Outing
Plan an outing with your kids. It could be the zoo, a museum or the park down the street. Decide how to get there; you could walk, ride bikes, drive or take public transportation. Pack a lunch or choose a fun place to eat. The options are endless.
4. Sponge Tag
Purchase some new sponges. Then place several buckets of water around the yard or park. The rules are the same as basic tag except you tag the person with the wet sponge.
3. Decorate Flip Flops
Grab a pair of flip flops along with fabric flowers, metal studs and jewels. Then, let an adult place a dot of hot glue on the flip flop. Use a small dot of glue for smaller details and a dollop for larger items. Due to the hot glue, this activity is better for older children.
2. Solar Beads
Purchase some solar beads. There are several online stores like amazon.com and stevespanglerscience.com that sell this item. Then, give kids the beads and elastic string. They can choose to make a necklace, bracelet or key chain. Finally, go out in the sun and watch the beads change colors.
1. Fruit Picking
Find a local farm to go pick some fresh fruit. In California, you can pick stone fruits during the summer. Find a place to pick your favorite kind at pickyourown.org.
