The availability and improvement of 3D technology has enabled filmmakers to bring the big screen right into viewers’ laps. 2011 had a handful of 3D film successes, and in 2012, even more films will be released using this technology.
In January, moviegoers already enjoyed 3D versions of “Beauty and the Beast,” “Underworld: Awakening,” “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace,” “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax,” and “Wrath of the Titans.” The rest of 2012 will be just as visually exciting.
In May 2012, comic fans will marvel at the 3D version of “The Avengers,” which brings the super heroes of Marvel Comics greatest series together on one screen for the first time. Starring Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Chris Hemsworth as Thor, fans will delight in seeing these two along with Captain America, The Hulk and many more, larger than life and more real than ever as they band together to battle evil in three-dimensional form. “Men in Black III” is also scheduled to be released in May, with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones returning as everyone’s favorite secret agents protecting the world from alien invasion. The 3D version is sure to delight fans of the comedic science fiction films of previous years.
In June, just in time for vacation, moviegoers can expect to don their 3D glasses for “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,” a film in which vampires are shown as the real purpose behind the civil war. The 16th President of the United States becomes a vampire hunter when he discovers that the undead are planning to take over America. 3D technology promises to make this an edge-of-your-seat adventure.
July 2012 will feature more excitement as “The Amazing Spider-Man” is scheduled to hit movie theaters in 3D. In this Spider-Man film, Peter Parker digs up his roots to learn the secrets behind his parents’ disappearance. This leads him to the lab of Dr. Curt Connor, who was his father’s former partner. Connor’s alter ego, The Lizard, forces Peter to make some difficult choices, which might alter his destiny forever. With 3D enhancement, viewers will get to leap from tall buildings along with Peter.

As school begins once more, “Finding Nemo” will revisit theaters, but this time in brilliant 3D. September will also welcome new films like “Dredd” and “Hotel Transylvania.” Both of these films will have the benefit of 3D enhancement as well.
Finally, in the last quarter of 2012, a bundle of 3D enhanced movies should make their way to theaters. “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” will thrill “Lord of the Rings” fans, as this prequel to the blockbuster trilogy follows Bilbo, played by Martin Freeman, as he embarks on a perilous journey that ends in winning the magical ring that rules them all, and the one that started it all. Fans of Cirque du Soleil will be able to experience the magic of a live performance in movie theaters, as “Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away” hits theaters in mid-December. Shot in 3D, this film should be a sight to behold.
Celebrate Christmas in 3D with “The Great Gatsby.” This 3D film adaption of the beloved literary classic stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby and Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, along with an all-star cast of characters all shot in visually stunning 3D.
Other movies due to be released in 3D in 2012 include “The Cabin in the Woods,” “Ronin,” “Gravity,” “Rise of the Guardians,” “Prometheus,” “Titanic,” “Brave,” and “Life of Pi.”
While some movies may not meet viewers’ expectations in terms of plot, characterization or thrills, 3D enhancement offers visual effects that can’t be matched. With the possibility of more films than those listed being released in 2012, viewers may need to get themselves a spare set of 3D glasses.
