The Oklahoma State Cowboys and Purdue Boilermakers meet in the 2013 Heart of Dallas Bowl on January 1st. Purdue went 3-5 in Big Ten Conference play this year and head into the bowl game with an overall record of 6-6. The Boilermakers wins came against an FCS team and five teams that combined to go 17-43 this season. Purdue did not beat a team with a winning record this year. Oklahoma State was 5-4 in the Big 12 and 7-5 overall. The Cowboys were 5-5 against teams that were bowl eligible.
When Purdue is on Offense
Purdue ranks 61st in the nation in scoring at 29.9 points per game. Quarterback Robert Marve completed 66% of his passes for 1522 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions. Purdue features the two Akeems at running back. Akeem Shavers led Purdue in carries (167), yards (778), and touchdowns (6) and Akeem Hunt averaged 8.0 yards per carry on his way to 335 yards. Purdue has three players with at least 40 catches and 350 yards.
The Cowboys rank 74th in scoring defense allowing 29.4 points per game. Oklahoma State’s defensive numbers don’t look great, but they played against some of the top offenses in the country. Eight of the Cowboys opponents ranked in the top 25 in the nation in scoring this season. As a team, Oklahoma State only had 22 sacks and 9 interception.
When Oklahoma State is on Offense
Oklahoma State has one of the most prolific offenses in the country. The Cowboys rank 4th in scoring at 44.7 points per game and 5th in total offense with 548.9 yards per game. Oklahoma State had injury issues at quarterback this year and actually have three different quarterbacks that threw for 1000 yards this season. Junior Clint Chelf will start at quarterback in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. Chelf completed 58% of his passes for 1391 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. Josh Stewart (96 catches, 1154 yards) is an outstanding target for Chelf. Running back Joseph Randle averaged 5.3 yards per carry on his way to 1351 yards rushing this season.
The Boilermakers rank 70th in scoring defense allowing 29.0 points per game. Purdue only had 20 sacks this season and will need to find a way to pressure Chelf to get the Cowboys passing attack out of rhythm.
2013 Heart of Dallas Bowl Pick Against the Spread
Oklahoma State is currently a 16.5-point favorite over Purdue in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. The Cowboys certainly played a more difficult schedule this season and have shown that they can beat good teams. Purdue didn’t beat any team with a winning record this season and they won’t beat Oklahoma State. The question is, can Oklahoma State cover the large spread? The Cowboys beat five bowl eligible teams this season, all by at least 21 points. Oklahoma State’s offense both running and passing will be effective against Purdue, and with a big lead they will be able to force Purdue to become one-dimensional on offense. I’m taking Oklahoma State and giving the 16.5 points.
Prediction: Oklahoma State 45 – Purdue 24
