In previous skincare articles I have written, I have been far from shy about professing my distrust of commercial skincare companies and over-the-counter face washes, masks and toners. Too many products are ripe with chemicals that can potentially be toxic, and I often feel the over-the-counter products worsen the condition of my skin. As an alternative, I’m a huge fan of making my own skincare products using all-natural ingredients, most of which are in my kitchen at all times.
By far the best natural skincare ingredient is fruit. Fruits are rich in various vitamins and nutrients, and the natural acids can do wonders for clearing up a variety of facial woes, such as dry patches and pimples. Fruit is also inexpensive in comparison to commercial skincare products, making this both an eco-friendly and affordable way to mix up your skincare routine! While virtually all fruits are safe to use on your skin, these are the four that will treat your face with the most TLC.
Strawberries are a natural source of salicylic acid, a common ingredient in most over-the-counter acne medications. Because of this, strawberries are ideal for using in all-natural, homemade face washes to treat your acne-prone skin. Strawberries are also ideal for using on oily skin, as they are rich in alpha-hydroxy acid which can reduce oil production in your pores. Regularly washing your face with strawberries can help control breakouts, smooth out imperfections in your skin and brighten up your overall complexion. You can mash them to make a mask, mix them with honey or combine them with milk.
Bananas are packed with tons of essential vitamins and nutrients, including Potassium, antioxidants, Vitamin B and Vitamin- B6. Because of this, bananas are excellent for treating dry, flaky skin, making them an ingredient I swear by in the wintertime when my face is as dry as the Mojave. You can mash them, mix them with honey or milk, combine them with oatmeal to treat combination skill or water them down into a toner to use after scrubbing your face with a cleanser.
Pineapples are a natural exfoliant, making them great for clearing out clogged pores and buffing away dead skin cells. You can cut a few slices and scrub your face with them to give your skin some much needed exfoliation, or you can mash them into a mask with honey or other fruits for a super deep clean.
Papayas are rich in antioxidants, so using them to wash your face will clear away free-radicals and other toxins lurking within your pores. Like pineapple, papaya is also a natural exfoliant. You can scrub your face down with sliced papaya, mash it into a mask or water it down into a toner.
