As a resident of Janesville, Wisconsin, I have personally had the opportunity to vote for Paul Ryan. Since his nomination to be Mitt Romney’s Vice President nominee, I have begun to hear a lot of different things about Congressman Ryan that just don’t sound right. Here are a few things myths and facts about Paul Ryan.
Myth 1: Paul Ryan is standing in the way of help for farmers and ranchers.
Fact: Paul Ryan voted in favor of HR6233 “Agricultural Disaster Assistance Act of 2012”. This bill passed the house, and is now waiting in the Senate. This bill provides payment rates of up to 75% of market value for livestock and agricultural products. Paul Ryan is from an agriculture-based state and will continue to protect American Agriculture.
Myth 2: Paul Ryan is 100% completely against Abortions.
Fact: Paul Ryan voted for HR3 “Prohibiting Taxpayer Funding of Abortion”. This bill was designed to prohibit any federal funds from being used on abortions except in cases of rape, incest, or the life of the woman is at risk, as stated in Section 308 of the bill. It also prohibits any tax deductions for medical expenses that include an abortion. Ryan also voted in favor of HR358 “Amends Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act to Prohibit Abortion Coverage” This bill authorizes health insurers to provide coverage for abortions, provided that no part of the premiums or services are paid for with federal funds.
Myth 3: With Paul Ryan on the ticket, interest on student loans will go up.
Fact: Paul Ryan Voted for HR4628 “Extending Student Loan Interest Rates”. This bill was passed to extend the current interest rates for undergraduate student loans until July 2013. Last time I checked, staying the same is not going up. What we will see an increase in is student tuition rates, which is either controlled by the private school or the state government.
Myth 4: Paul Ryan isn’t fully supportive of Women’s Rights.
Fact: Paul Ryan’s weakness when it comes to women’s rights is in the contraceptive portion of women’s rights. However, Paul Ryan does support HR4970 “Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2012”. Title I of the act enhances judicial and law enforcement tools to combat violence against women and title II improves services for victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. The act makes aid for sexual assault victims more readily available and expands the implementation of sexual assault forensic medical examinations.
Myth 5: Paul Ryan only supports the interest of big business.
Fact: Paul Ryan voted in favor of HR6169 “Pathway to Job Creation through a Simpler, Fairer Tax Code Act of 2012”. This bill is designed to make American workers and businesses more competitive by creating a stable tax code so employers and families can plan, keep small business taxes low, reduce America’s corporate tax rate (which is currently the highest in the world), and minimizing double taxation of invest and capital.
