Taking a plate of cupcakes to work seemed like a nice gesture until one coworker complained that my homemade baked goods weren’t sugar-free. Her in my face rant, followed by an official complaint put her on the top of my “coworkers I hate to work with” list. Fortunately, I don’t work at the company any more but occasionally I send up good wishes for those who remain behind with this happy lady. A recent lunch with friends brought us back to this work topic and I was surprised to learn that so many of us had such bad coworker experiences. In general, here’s a list of the top six coworkers we loathe working with.
The Faker: It’s may be okay to sugarcoat a weekend fishing story but when you start sending yourself flowers…that’s a bit much. One coworker was caught red-handed faking when she sent herself a singing telegram for her birthday and signed her boyfriend’s name. A mutual friend complimented the guy on his thoughtfulness only to discover he wasn’t doing the sending. It was her. Just be yourself and don’t fake silly things.
Tip for coping with a faker: Say, “That’s interesting,” and don’t probe for details.
The Crybaby: She’s constantly crying about something. Her cat died. Her boyfriend moved out. She had a bad hair day. Make the mistake of asking about her weekend and you’ll undergo the full “crybaby” experience. We simply hate working with someone who cries all the time.
Tip for coping with a crier: Hand her a tissue and keep walking. Ask someone in human resources for help.
The Glory Hog: This coworker’s ego is so over-inflated or damaged that she can’t stand it if someone else gets a little pat on the back. The Glory Hog takes her role as self-designated “Work Diva” seriously. Unfortunately, there’s probably one in every company.
Tip for handling this coworker: Document everything. If management decides to look a little closer, you can prove it was your brilliant idea.
The Office Tart: She flirts with every cute guy that walks through the door. We hate that! Not only does she snatch up all the dateable guys, she makes the rest of the female staff look bad.
Tips for coping with a flirtatious female: Encourage her to be professional with your smart example. The rest you can’t do much about.
The Stinky Socializer: This person loves to hang out at your cubicle but the body odor is hard to handle. What can you do if a smelly socializer stops by your office every day?
Tips for handling the stinker: You’ve got a few choices, keep your door shut to traffic, invest in candles or talk to someone in human resources. A face-to-face confrontation could hurt someone’s feelings.
