According to a recent study released by the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation, there has been an increase in new fishing participation among females in particular. With more women involved in outdoor pursuits than ever before, comes the need for useful gift ideas they will appreciate.
Here are a few essentials that I always have handy when preparing to brave the elements:
Moisture Wicking Shirt
If worn in warm climates during outdoor activity, moisture wicking fabrics aid in evaporation and help prevent overheating. In cold climates, these fabrics keep perspiration away from the skin to avoid an uncomfortably damp or chilly feeling. I have a collection of moisture wicking performance tees made by ALO that are ideal for either a jog outdoors or a day of fishing. Estimated price range: $30 to $50.
Most of the convertible pants I’ve tried on in the past haven’t looked the least bit fashionable. Thankfully, there are more feminine style options available this season. I like the look of the Silver Ridge Convertible Pant by Columbia Sportswear. Convertible pants are perfect for wearing on days when cool mornings can turn into warm afternoons since the pants convert into shorts with just one zip. Estimated price range: $50 to $70.
Help keep her prepared for changes in weather by giving her a rain jacket and rain pants. I’ve needed my Frogg Toggs Pro Action Rain Jacket on several occasions when an offshore rain shower came up unexpectedly. Frogg Toggs makes both rain jackets and rain pants in a feminine color called Black Cherry. Estimated price range: $25 to $30 for the rain jacket, $15 to $20 for the rain pants.
Any outdoor enthusiast will benefit from a good pair of polarized sunglasses since they cut the glare that is created by water, snow, or pavement. Costa Del Mar makes polarized sunglasses that are ideal for fishing and boating due to the brand’s patented light filtering technology. Several women’s styles are available, and Costa Del Mar warrants against defects in materials or workmanship for the lifetime of the product. Estimated price range: $150 to $250.
Odor Off Hand Soap
I was thrilled to discover this new product since I tend to mind a bit more than my male counterparts if I walk off a boat smelling like cut bait. Odor Off Hand Soap is made from biodegradable ingredients and contains activated carbon, which removes the lipids, and proteins that cause unpleasant odors. I’ve found it useful for not only removing the smell of bait, fish slime, and wild game, but also for strong household smells like garlic and onion. Estimated price range: $9 to $10 for 6 ounces.
This seamless tube of fabric helps protect the face and head from the effects of the wind or sun during outdoor activities. A Buff can be worn several different ways, but I prefer to wear mine neckerchief style or hair band style to help keep my hair out of my eyes when I’m reeling in all those big fish. Estimated price range: $20 to $25.
