I do not claim to be an expert in blogging by any means. However, I am a frequent reader of blogs. I have recently been trying to find some new blogs to indulge in and have run into several that I can only label as unreadable. I know that not every blog will appeal to all of my expectations, however, there are a few pet peeves that I can absolutely not stand. If a blog has any of these deficiencies, I will probably quickly click away and fail to return.
Cutesy, cursive font may be pretty, but they are hard on the eyes and difficult to read.
I have visited quite a few blogs that only consist of blog hops, sponsor requests and giveaways. The whole purpose of a blog is to create useful content!
A few, nicely placed ads do not bother me one bit. If you can make money from your site, go for it. It is the blogs that have their side bars filled with ads and sponsors that I find tacky and distracting. The worst are those ads that are mismatched in size or are unaligned. If you have an ad that hangs over the edge of your blog, please re-size your margins.
Too many colors, pastel fonts against a white background or white font against black are all no-nos. Black font against a white background is easiest to read. When choosing colors, pick two or three then be consistent. Not only will your blog look more stream-lined, it will also be easier to read.
Bloggers that don’t take the time to respond to comments, especially if a question is posed, make me feel that they are unappreciative of their audience. I viewed over a hundred blogs yesterday, commented on nearly forty and have only received two responses twenty-four hours later. Here’s the thing, I will continue to visit the bloggers that respond; I won’t visit those that failed to respond.
Alignment of text
Do not center or right align your text, please! I know it might seem different, unique or even creative; but really it is distracting and confusing. Left align and break up long passages into paragraphs. I can’t stand to read one large lump of sentences. Break it up and make it easy for your readers to focus and soak up the information.
No follow button
There have been times I have found blogs I really enjoy but then can’t find a way to follow them. Make your subscribe and social media buttons easy to find; it will increase your readership. Also, make sure you have a contact page with your email clearly stated. Make it easy for your readers to contact you!
