We’ve all had many different looks or fallowed different trends. I know I have. Through my experimenting, my education at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Francisco and watching a lot of episodes of TLC’s What Not to Wear, I’ve found there are basic things you can do to improve how you present yourself to others.
There are people that are squeaky clean and those that are not. Everyone has their own views on what good hygiene is. Did you know what washing your hair everyday can damage your hair and lead to hair loss later on in life? Use a shower cap and wash your hair every 2-4 days to keep those gorgeous locks.
A face washing routine is important as well. You don’t have to get expensive face washes and scrubs to get results. Just make sure you clean, exfoliate, use an astringent and moisturizer 1-2 times a day. There are beauty supply stores that are affordable such as Sally Beauty Supply or Ulta. Try not to use anything with heavy perfumes. Sunscreen is always mandatory for the face no matter how sunny it is or isn’t. It helps prevent wrinkles and of course skin cancer.
2. Use a body length mirror
When you use just the half mirror in your bathroom to evaluate your look you’re only evaluating half of your look but people see all of you. Utilize a body length mirror. Make sure your shoes go well with that outfit and that your proportions are correct. For example; if your pants are really tight and high but your shirt is really long and loose it doesn’t create an attractive form. Make sure you waist is defined and that your clothes fit you properly.
It also helps you catch what could be a big embarrassment later. Are you wearing a skirt? Bend over in the mirror. This is what others will see. You better fix that rump.
You don’t need to become a seamstress to learn how to fix your own clothes. There may be some garments that are too complicated and it’s best to take those to a tailor. You can make minor adjustments at home with a thread and needle. For example if your pants are too long you can do a very simple stitch to keep them tucked underneath. If your pants have gotten too tight they sell button extenders at most fabric and craft stores such as Beverly’s and if they are too big there are clasps for that as well.
You don’t want to go too crazy with this. If you’re going to wear something that’s flashy stick to one thing and the rest should be plain. For example; you’re wearing a very nice tailored dress. You can wear one crazy, girly, cutesy, whatever accessory and that’s it. You can’t wear five. Don’t put that pearl necklace on when you’re already wearing that crazy hat. It’s better just to put one flower in your hair rather than ten.
The same goes for make-up. Try to look as natural as possible and use your make-up shades to bring out your good features. Don’t try to create new ones. You’re lips will never ever look like Angelina Jolie’s’. Those are her lips on her face. You can’t have them. Deal with it. Stick to sheer face make-up with minimal shadow and line just the tops of your eyes. Don’t draw your eyebrows in crazy thick. Keep them maintained. Use blush if you look sickly pale and smile when you put it on. A light lip gloss or chap stick should suffice for the day. Of course you can get all dolled up for an evening out, but keep in mind, less is more.
6. Work Out
This is essential. Your clothes will fit you 10 times better when you have the body to wear them well. I’m not saying you need to lose any amount of weight to look better but when you maintain your health and exorcise your body, it shows. If you sit around, eat cheese puffs and drink soda, it shows. Get fit and your clothes will fit. I used to be 45 lbs heavier and now I go to the gym at least every other night. I love how my clothes fit now and I don’t have to worry about how tight something is or if I’m comfortable. I feel ten times more comfortable in general after exercising.
7. Figure out what works for you
Think of a style or theme you like. Perhaps you’re really into classic graphic novels. Why not try to dress in that theme? It creates a look to go for when you figure out what you like. For example; I love the vintage everything. I try to wear a mixture of classic vintage with today’s trends. Pin up girl clothing is a great site for cute dresses that look vintage. Be yourself and have fun!
