My wife is a stay-at-home mom and, even though I’m the one who brings home the paychecks, I do have a lot of respect for what she does. After all, she’s the one who takes care of our two energetic daughters, keeps the house functional and makes sure the bills get paid.
As a result of that, I do try to find ways to reward my wife for what she does. One of the ways I have been doing that is by making her breakfast in bed a couple times each month for the past year or so.
I’ll admit it, it sounds a bit cliché and, since I do this so often, a lot of people might think it losing meaning. However, I have managed to make this enjoyable for her each time by following a few simple rules.
First, it doesn’t have to be a special occasion. Yes, breakfast in bed is a great way to start her birthday or our anniversary off right. But, I found it has more meaning when it’s random. Most of the time, it’s on a Sunday morning (mostly because Saturday night is when we watch our late night movies). But, I have changed things up by making it for her on other days too. I’ve even gone into work late just to surprise her before I left.
Second, timing is everything. My wife is not a morning person so the last thing I want to do is wake her in the middle of a dream. But, if I wait for her to be fully awake, there’s a good chance she’ll get out of bed before I can surprise her. I found the best time to serve the breakfast is just as she is first starting to wake up, something I’m very accurate at predicting after more than 9 years of marriage.
Third, simple breakfasts are better. It’s not that I wouldn’t prefer to make my wife homemade French toast. Frozen waffles are just much more practical because I know how long they’ll take and can make them without making a big mess or ton of noise in the kitchen. As I said before, timing is everything and I don’t want her waking up before I’m ready.
Of course, I don’t just serve her frozen waffles (or frozen French toast sticks). I’ll also add some sausage, toast and even fresh fruit to her plate so she has a full breakfast.
Last, don’t forget the drink. This was actually the mistake I used to make all the time. Now, before I even think about making her breakfast in bed, I check out what we have for a drink selection. Normally, I’ll give her orange juice. But, I also do like to change things up a bit by finding alternatives. A few days ago, for example, I brought her a glass of wine.
As I said before, breakfast in bed is a great way to show her you appreciate her. If you follow my guidelines, you can surprise her and make it memorable for her.
