We’ve all heard the old wives’ tale about the ladybug: when a ladybug lands on someone, that person’s wish will come true. However, not only is the ladybug considered a good luck symbol, it is also known as a symbol of love, too! In fact, the Asian’s believe that, if one catches and releases a ladybug, that the ladybug will fly to their soul mate, and whisper their name in their ear. Also, the number of spots on a ladybug’s back will indicate the number of months when one’s true love will appear. In many other cultures, the spots on a ladybug also represent the number of children a couple will have or the amount of money that one will receive in their bank account that year. In Belgium, if a ladybug crawled onto a women’s hand, she will get married within a year. In Norway, if a man and women see a ladybug at the same time, they will become a couple. So, no wonder why couples are pulling up a seat for this little “uninvited” guest! Want your union to start on the right foot? Why not create a wedding theme around the ladybug?! Here are some ladybug themed ideas to help you get started!
First, let’s pick the color scheme. For a simple wedding scheme, why not choose a red, black, and white? Or, how about choosing a yellow, red, and white or yellow, black, and red color palette? Whatever color combination you do decide on, do consider the time of day and season when your event takes place! For this design demonstration, I will be using red, black and white.
Second, pick the perfect setting for your wedding. An outdoor wedding would be the ideal location for this theme! Outdoor areas, such as a garden or park, would form the perfect backdrop. If the weather doesn’t permit, you could always bring the outdoors in!
Third, pick the invite! A simple black, red, and white polka dot wedding stationary would be a subtle and perfect invitation. If you want to add some whimsy to your stationary, you can always add a very small ladybug sticker to your invitation or envelope. www.zazzle.com has a black and white polka dot red daisy wedding Invitation perfect for this event! Also, this website offers ladybug stamps, to enhance those mailings!
Fourth, the table and room design. I suggest picking round tables to emulate the shape of this little bug. Next, I recommend picking a red table linen with white polka dots. Next, set a white charger, at each place setting. Then, place a black plate on top of each white charger. Fold red cotton napkins, in a daisy napkin fold, and then place them on top of each black plate. Place a small red glass ladybug bead on each folded napkin. You could purchase these glass beads at: www.orientaltrading.com. Next, choose either white ceramic or glass vases and fill them with red and white blooms. Need flower suggestions? How about red or white Anemones, Begonias, or Gerbera Daisies? The Anemones are perfect for this theme! Why? Because these red flowers have white and black polka dot centers! Want to use flowers that attract ladybugs in the wild? Use red and white varieties of: Yarrow, Cosmo, Cornflower, Queen Anne’s Lace, Marigold, and Calendula. Place the centerpieces in the middle of each table. Then, surround the centerpieces with white or glass votive candle holders, with white or black candles. Add white Chiavari chairs to each place setting. Hang red floral pomanders, with a white or black polka dot pattern, on to the back of each chair, with a black ribbon. Also, add red chair cushions to each chair. Hang several larger polka dot pomanders over each table, with black ribbon.
Fifth, create an incredible menu. Don’t want aphids or bugs on the menu? How about a garden inspired menu fit for a bug enthusiast! For example, grilled asparagus spears wrapped in pancetta, shot glasses of chilled Gazpacho soup, garden salad with edible flowers, roasted rosemary chicken or duck, wild rice, grilled vegetables, chilled teas and lemonade, infused with fresh fruit and herbs.
Sixth, pick the perfect themed wedding cake. Pick a simple round tiered white fondant cake. Add red and white polka dot ribbon, red and black polka dot ribbon, and solid black ribbon, to each tier of the cake. Add gum paste flowers and ladybugs, for added interest.
Not only did the ladybug arrange for you “love bugs” to fall in love with one another. But, she might grant the two of you a blessed life together, as well! Just follow this simple step-by-step guide and you will have that “lucky” ladybug themed wedding. Good luck!
