Even in fiction, no one can tell a tale quite as well as someone who has lived it. Richard Reese, an experienced truck driver and author, does an amazing job of weaving trucking rules and regulations, over the road lifestyle and his knowledge of the roadways, with hot sex, romance, murder, and police procedure.
In Strawberries, The Ballad Of Ricky & Joey, an eBook available for download on Kindle, Ricky is a rugged and weathered truck driver from Savannah, GA, known by his friends and fellow truckers as having a way with women, while he insists he is merely a shy country boy. It soon becomes evident that Ricky’s real charm lies in his mannerisms of being a true southern gentleman. Ricky is an owner operator who hauls fresh produce and pushes the limits of his truck, himself, and the law.
Joey is a young but wise woman recently unknowingly taken advantage of and victimized by her gang banger cousin, resulting in her being stranded alone on the interstate, miles from home, while en route to a new job in another state, which would allow her to continue her college education. After Ricky comes to her rescue, he soon learns there is much more to this sexy lady than meets the eye, and he likes what he learns. As the couple travel across the country in an eighteen wheeler, law enforcement back in California try to put together the pieces in order to solve a store robbery gone wrong, which they think somehow involves Joey.
As a police detective tracks down information, and interviews suspects on the west coast, Ricky and Joey are busy forming a relationship more lasting than a simple ride to Florida, with the couple fulfilling each other’s innermost desires, neither wanting the ride to end. However, as their destination comes nearer, Ricky begins to question his emotions. He feels Joey deserves much more than what an over the road trucker can give her. Having had the road ruin more than one relationship, he tells himself he must soon say good-bye, as he finds himself unexpectedly falling in love.
While I would consider Strawberries primarily a romance, it is packed with action, and the characters are unforgettable. The author smoothly transitions the reader from a trucker’s journey across the United States to a police shootout to a shower scene that will leave any reader feeling the steam in more ways than one.
Although the story is fictional, the details are realistic and obviously drawn from the author’s own experience of life on the road. The only fault I found with this book is that it ended much too soon. I can only hope for a sequel to the Ballad of Ricky and Joey. This reader highly recommends Strawberries, The Ballad Of Ricky & Joey.
