Green shrubs are commonly planted around the foundations of homes. They also line countless sidewalks and fences. They look nice in some settings, but in others they are unsightly to say the least. Although some produce unique red berries, they are not usually visually appealing. Many people find green shrubs considerably flat when it comes to appearance.
I prefer alternatives to green shrubs in the landscape. I want vibrant colors surrounding my home. I also want unique form and something other than the usual bushes. The landscape looks the same from house to house when everyone plants green shrubs. Consider something far more beautiful instead, and give your landscape a one of a kind look that goes beyond the usual shrubbery.
Plant Butterfly Bushes Instead of Boring Green Shrubs
Healthy butterfly bushes have green foliage, but they are nothing like shrubs. The foliage is sparser, but the limbs are topped with beautiful spikes covered in tiny flowers. They attract butterflies and hummingbirds of many different varieties. Butterfly bushes come in a many colors including snow white, various shades of purple and a number of lovely warm hues. They also smell great! They are one of the most striking alternatives to green shrubs in the landscape, and since they attract hummingbirds and butterflies, they are an excellent choice for those that appreciate the beauty of nature.
Add Large Potted Plants to the Landscape
Alternatives to green shrubs do not have to become a permanent part of the landscape. For easy and highly unique alternatives, consider adding large potted plants to the landscape. Purchase outdoor pots in colors, styles and materials of your choice, and fill them with perennial plants that will come back year after year. Plant the perennials in the centers of the pots, and surround them with lower growing annuals that bloom and thrive all summer long. Consider delphiniums for the centers and petunias and vinca vines for the outer portions of the planters. The alternatives will look stunning and far more visually appealing than ordinary green shrubs in the landscape.
Plant Bright Yellow Forsythia Bushes
Not all shrubs are green. On the contrary, some of the most beautiful bushes of all are primarily bright yellow. Forsythia bushes are wonderful alternatives to green shrubs. As the photo shows, forsythia bushes are absolutely gorgeous in the landscape. Consider planting lower growing flowers in warm hues in front of the bushes. Orange marigolds, red salvia and copper colored chrysanthemums are excellent choices. Along with bright yellow forsythia bushes, they can turn a drab landscape into a fabulous outdoor showplace that is sure to impress.
