Near the end of the movie The Color Purple, a number of the characters walk towards a church singing Maybe God is trying to tell you something. I believe God may be trying to tell me something regarding the whole grain, Barley.
Last month a friend introduced me to canned barley. lentil, and bean soup. It was delicious. She gave me another can last week.
A few days ago a book, entitled Miracle Food Cures from the Bible, feel out of my book shelf. I had not read it in over 6 months. When I picked it up it fell open to chapter 8, The Amazing Healing Power of a Grain Blessed By Jesus. That grain is barley.
According to this book, barley has health benefits of miracle proportions. Barley and green barley juice have been known to relieve nausea and constipation. Barley juice is recommended for pregnant women who experience morning sickness.
Barley is a nutritional powerhouse, which is high in fiber, vitamins and minerals. Barley has been shown to cure gallstones, sinusitis, vaginal infections and cancer. The book also says barley can reduce pain and inflammation in gum disease, as well as heal wounds and peptic ulcers.
This morning I was shopping and I saw a box of Quaker Quick Barley on the store shelf. It seemed to stand out from the other items. And I wonder why I had not noticed this product before. The box says that as a whole grain with high soluble fiber, barley as part of a healthy diet helps reduce cholesterol and blood pressure.
Barley is mentioned 37 times in the bible. The most famous story is probably in John 6:9, when Jesus multiplied 2 fish and 5 barley loaves to feed a multitude of over 5,000.
I do not believe that barley falling into my lap so to speak, 4 times within a month is a mere coincidence. After all I pray constantly to find natural cures. And I believe this is one. We know that no one food in and of itself is a miracle cure all. Barley however, has amazing health benefits.
Science has taught us that nature will take it’s course much better when we are living an over all healthy lifestyle via diet and exercise. Barley is one of many whole grains that will do what our Creator intended when we have other aspects of our lives in order.
I often get tired of eating oatmeal. I now alternate oatmeal with barley for breakfast, I find that barley causes me to feel a little fuller. When I eat lunch, it is about an hour later than usual. And I do not crave mid morning snacks as I used to.
The little boy in the bible with the fish and barley loaves, had no idea that His small lunch would feed a multitude of people. And he certainly did not realize that the grain which was blessed by Jesus, is still blessing people today.
