American Idol has a really talented group of young people this year. Last night’s (April 11, 2012) performances were pretty good over all. Here is how the evening played out.
Country Singer Skyler Lane kicked off the singing for the night. She sang: Didn’t Know How Much I Loved You by, Idol’s own Kelly Pickler. Skyler I think will have a great country career. There are many times when her voice reminds me of Reba McEntire’s. She did really good on the song. She had some really stiff competition on this show however. jimmy Ivine said she owned the song and I agree. Randy said this is the kind of song she should be singing and it was, “hot.” Jennifer and Seven had nothing but good things to say.
Coltin Dixon was the second to perform he sang Love the Way You Lie, by Skyler Grey. I didn’t even know someone did this song before Rhianna and Eminem but I really loved this version of the song and I loved how Coltin did it. He had a really heartfelt performance and hit the sensitive spots when they needed to be hit and came on strong when he needed to. I think this was the performance of the night. Randy called it subtle and sensitive, Jennifer said he made it his own, Steven can’t wait until Coltin starts doing some of his own music. All loved it.
Duet Time – Elise and Philip they did Somebody I Used to Know by, Gotye. The performance in my opinion was good not great, took me a moment to realize what they were singing. Philip pretty much does everything his own way. They looked cute together and it was an OK performance in my opinion. The judges comments pretty much echoed mine. Randy though Elise shined more and I have to agree with him on that.
Jessica Sanchez performed next. She sang Stuttering by, Jasmine Sullivan. I had never heard the song before, I thought it sounded like a Beyonce song, but that could just be because Jessica sounds so much like Beyonce and in this song in particular. Every time I hear this girl sing I find it really hard to believe she is only 16. She has a really powerful voice, she nailed the song and she knows how to sell the performance. Awesome job! A very close 2nd to Coltlin’s performance. The judges could do nothing but compliment her.
Joshua Ledet came on right after Jessica and for the past few weeks he has been winning the nights with Jessica coming in at a close second. Joshua was his same old stellar self when he sang Runaway Baby, By Bruno Mars. He performed this up tempo song like a champ and gave a good performance on the stage to boot. No complaints about the performance, the song was not meant to show off amazing vocals like he has and that is why although his performance was great he earns the number 3 spot for me tonight behind Coltin and Jessica.
Duet Time – Coltin and Skyler sang, Don’t You Want to Stay by, Kelly Clarkson and Jason Aldean. Their voices sounded good together, they had a pretty nice although not perfect blend and when they each sang alone they sounded great. I didn’t think they had a lot of chemistry though. Steven and Jennifer loved it Randy thought it was OKAY.
Hollie Cavanaugh was next, she sang Perfect by Pink. Poor Hollie she just can’t get a break. She sings really well and technically you can’t fault her, there is just something that lacks in her performances. The judges were not kind. I guess they have to mean to someone although they were not terribly mean. The judges thought it was an improvement but still not perfect. I am afraid against the competition she is up against Hollie may be the one to go home tonight.
Next up Was Phillip Phillips who sang Give a Little More by, Maroon 5. Same performance as every other week different song that sounded the same as every other song he sings. I think he is a cutie but he is a one trick pony, he needs to do something else if he wants to impress me. The judges were underwhelmed as well. He should end up in the bottom 3 as well, however, he is Vote for the Worst’s person of the week so we will see if that saves him. I think Hollie deserves to stay more.
Jessica, Hollie and Joshua sang Stronger by Kellie Clarkson. Jessica started out really shaky and Hollie didn’t start out that great either but once the song got going it got really good. Very strong vocals by all three.
Elise Testone sang You and I by Lady Gaga. Elise is no lady Gaga but I have to say she is really growing on me. I thought it was a good solid performance and I enjoyed it very much. The judges thought she had a great moment last night and her vocals were beautiful. She got the best spot again this week so lets see if that helps her. I would love to see her continue and I thing she will stick around at least one more week and 2 more if I am right on the money, but we shall see.
