When dad is a Marine, on active duty and away from home, what can you give him for Father’s Day that will ease your pain and his loneliness? Of course, an active duty dad spends hundreds and sometimes thousands of hours risking his life for the safety of yours and ours. He is out there in the ditches protecting Americans so we can be free and sleep safely. His courage and bravery is commendable. He should be praised for his sacrifices. He is giving up precious hours with his loved ones for his country. Many hours are being lost watching his children grow up and being home during those special times: holidays, birthdays, graduations and so many others day far too many to list.
He never gets the opportunity to just rush home when you may have cut your first tooth, or when your mother was in the hospital going through hours of labor pain, or those many hours during the night when she sat up alone comforting you when you were ill. Of course he would have killed to have been there, but he felt a higher call of duty. He felt the need to serve his country like so many other brave young men. The sacrifices made are sometimes not rewarded as they should. But you can make his time away a lot more bearable. When dad is in the trenches during Father’s Day or even when home on Furlough, considers these gifts to make his day the most special day possible.
Cassette Tape Recorder
This is not the old traditional voice recording digital tape recorder here. The one we recommend is a cassette tape recorder. One of those where you can record whatever you like on your end and send it to dad for him to pop it into his recorder and listen on his end. And vice versa. He can record and send information to you from his end. All you have to do is keep plenty of tapes available. Whenever you want to provide him with new information, just add it the recording and when the tape is full, pop it out, secure it safely in postal wrap fashion where it will be almost impossible to damaged by being crushed or broken as best as possible and send it on. Dad will love getting taped recorded information, spoken to him and not just written, on a weekly or even daily basis.
Portable DVD Player
Now while dad may not get too many opportunities to enjoy the DVD, when he does, it will make him extremely happy if he has a DVD made especially of the family that will provide happy sayings or messages or even pictures of activities he may have missed recorded and sent to him while away. He is missing so much of the many hours of memories. But as much as possible, these memories can be stored for him to share and even a copy sent to him for his enjoyment while away. With a portable DVD player, dad can use it with a radio set up at his camp or while in the jeep heading out for duty or anytime his attention will not be needed otherwise. He can even use it while relaxing in the barracks.
Digital Photo Album
While away, one of the most important things soldiers indicate they need are memories of home. Pictures are the most practical way of providing those memories. Providing dad with a digital photo album, even in the form of a keychain, will help keep him going during those times when he is surrounded by the ills of military life. Make this keychain live for him. Add all the photos you can from scenes of family gatherings, new family members, church activities or anything that will help him when he needs encouragement. The keychain is the smallest portable album available, but this would be perfect while he is away. Then when returning home, he still has it and can carry it with him at all times.
