The “Bachelor Pad” finale was such a shocker that fans of the reality television show will undoubtedly be talking about this ending for weeks. Nick Peterson, the guy nobody expected to win, pulled off an amazing victory and claimed the entire $250,000 grand prize. It might have been one of the craziest endings ever on a reality television show. The drama was just that good. The emotions were over the top. In the end, a guy who laid low for weeks pulled off an amazing win.
So how did it break down? First, Nick and his teammate Rachel Trueheart had to get a vote from former cast members to edge Chris and Sarah even to make it into the finals. Nick and Rachel won that vote quite easily-mostly because the cast members felt that Chris was a little too unpleasant in the household. But what came next on the “Bachelor Pad” finale was shocking even for long time reality fans.
The two contestants, Nick and Rachel, were provided the option of either voting to “keep” or “share” the $250,000 grand prize. If the two voted to share, they’d split the $250,000 evenly. If both voted to keep, the other house guests would split the money. If one voted to share and the other to keep, the person who voted “keep” would keep the entire prize. Rachel, who was emotionally wrecked when her love interest Michael was sent home, nearly left the competition. From the urge of Michael, Rachel stayed on with the show and reluctantly teamed up with Nick.
Nick was continually bad mouthed by other contestants on the show for having little personality and not playing an intelligent game. Rachel revealed her “keep” or “share” decision first. She decided to “share” with Nick believing he’d do the same. A sly grin came over Nick’s face when she brought out her “share” card. What came next will be talked about in reality television history for years. It was a move only “Survivor” and “Big Brother” fans might appreciate. It probably made “Survivor” Russell look like an angel. Nick talked at length about how nobody ever tried to believe in him or help him in the game. He eluded to the fact that Rachel even was an unwilling and reluctant partner. So then he flashed his unforgettable “keep” sign much to the delight of the audience.
Rachel, who had since become a non-item with Michael, didn’t take the double blow of “Bachelor Pad” woes well. She chased Nick off stage and confronted him over and over again. This was after Nick seemed to relish in the fact that he won despite little or no help from anyone. Maybe he pushed it too far and enjoyed it just a little too much. The debate about his victory and his seemingly overplayed taunts will probably rage for a few weeks.
It was still perhaps the best reality television drama fans may have ever witnessed. Perhaps the only word to describe it was “classic”. Nick may come across as a jerk to some–but the closing montage on the “Bachelor Pad” finale utilized various sound bytes of the other contestants revealing how just incapable they believed Nick to be. Peterson got the last laugh by taking the entire $250,000 and leaving Rachel Trueheart with nothing.
Was it the right thing to do? Probably not. Was it the most insane reality television moment ever? It might just be. Viewers who missed the show could be scrambling in the next few days to see the incredibly outrageous ending. The “Bachelor Pad” finale shocker will be hard to top-no matter what we see in the future.
