After the kids head back to school, it isn’t long before sniffles, colds and full-blown flu symptoms start to run rampant. Send your kids off with a back-to-school, tissue packet holder tucked inside their backpacks. It may not stop the germs from infecting your child, but at least they will be prepared with tissues at the ready and a stylish holder to contain them.
Things You Will Need:
Red, green, brown and white embroidery floss
Cut a 5-inch-wide by 7-inch-long rectangle from black felt.
Trace a 2-inch circle on scrap paper using a compass. This is the pattern for your apple applique. You could also draw a 2-inch apple-shape freehand if desired. Cut out the apple pattern.
Pin the pattern to red felt and cut out. Cut a small stem from brown felt a scant 1/4 inch wide by 1 inch long. From green felt, cut a 1/2-inch-wide by 1-inch-long football shape for the leaf.
Lay the black felt rectangle on your work surface with the long edges running horizontal. Center and arrange the apple pieces in the middle of the rectangle. Overlap the edges of the apple pieces as desired. Pin the pieces to the black felt. Using three strands of embroidery floss that matches each corresponding piece, blanket stitch around the apple and whip stitch around the stem and leaf. This is the right side of the tissue holder.
Cut a long, but manageable, length of white embroidery floss separated into three strands. Stitch 1/4-inch-long blanket stitches, stitched 1/4 inch apart, along the short edges of the rectangle. Knot the ends of the floss and bury them on the wrong side of the felt.
Lay the felt rectangle with the wrong side facing up on your work surface. Fold the short ends to the middle, butting the ends together. You now have a folded 3 1/2-inch-wide by 5-inch-long rectangle. Pin the 3 1/2-inch sides together.
Stitch 1/4-inch-long blanket stitches, stitched 1/4 inch apart, along the pinned edges using white embroidery floss. Knot the ends inside the tissue holder.
Insert a travel tissue packet inside the holder.
Felt does not fray. If you would like to make a tissue holder using a sewing machine, you can still leave the cut edges exposed on the outside. Sew a straight or decorative stitch along the short ends and the pinned edges, 1/4 inch from the edge.
The apple applique can also be stitched in place using your sewing machine and using any decorative stitch you desire.
