One of the down sides of being a picky eater is I don’t allow myself the opportunity to experience all there is to enjoy out there. Fortunately for me, my partner is the complete opposite which forces me to step out of my comfort zone ever so often. Goal number one on his list was to expand my view on Mexican food, next was introducing me to Indian food. This time around however, he was determined to get me on board with his absolute favorite, Thai Food. After my dining experience at Bangkok Delight, I am ashamed to say that, in my 15 or so year residency in Columbia, Maryland, I had never made the 2 minute drive to indulge my taste buds.
We made it to dinner at Bangkok Delight about an hour or so before closing. While other restaurants may have rushed us along as closing time approached that certainly was not the case for the staff at this Thai restaurant. From the minute we stepped foot in the door we were greeted by a very friendly host who promptly showed us to our booth. The hospitality only grew throughout our time there. The atmosphere gave me a piece of Thailand. My absolute favorite part was the ceiling of the restaurant which was covered in dozens of gorgeous and completely unique Thai umbrellas. I was so infatuated in fact that I asked our host where I could get one and for how much. With a chuckle, he let me know that it would be an extremely expensive venture because the only place I could get one is in Thailand! From that point on I knew I was really going to get some authentic Thai food.
Seeing as how my normal selection at any restaurant is some variation of pasta and cheese, I left the ordering up to my boyfriend. Being a frequent diner at Bangkok Delight, he knew just what to order to satisfy my hunger. To start we ordered the spring roll appetizer which was $5.50. Two rolls came with the order and a sweet and sour sauce was served alongside them for dipping. For the main meal, we had an order of Red Curry which had your choice of meat; we chose chicken, basil and red and green peppers. This dish came to around $10.99. To accompany curry we also got an order of the highly talked about Pad Thai noodles which incorporated bean sprouts, cabbage, peanut, egg, and once again your choice of meet (chicken again for us) which I believe also ran for about $10.99. The Red Curry, which we put over white rice, was absolutely wonderful. The right mix of flavor and spice really set the dish off. While the strong peanut taste of the Pad Thai was a bit overwhelming for my simple taste buds, I could hear guests across the restaurant raving about how it was the best dish on the menu and my boyfriend definitely seemed to agree. The dishes are made to share with at least one other person, making it a more intimate setting. The prices were not bad, and the amount as well as the quality of food was well worth what we spent.
The ambiance and the food of course was absolutely delightful however I would say this would not be the best place to go if you are looking for a great view to set off the meal. However, I believe that the mood, the great food and the excellent staff will distract you from that. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to avid Thai eaters or for those like me, who are just getting their feet wet. Make the visit. Trust me; your taste buds will thank you!
