Programmers are men and women that enjoy building a program from scratch. If you are starting a website and are in need of ideas and coding, then a programmer is the person that you really want to speak to. You will need to know such things as, which types of programming languages are going to be needed for your project? Will you be using Java, C ++, Python or another language. If you are thinking about getting into computer programming, then you are going to have to know a few basic rules in this career. For starters, you are going to have to get a four year bachelor’s degree in something that is IT related. Forget about what people told you about starting your career without a degree. Many coders make the mistake of not going to college because a company is willing to give them a job without having a degree. However, once you are in your job, you will regret not going to college. It will not be easy for you to move up as a software engineer or a programming manager. There are thousands of people in the world today that have a degree and they will more than likely be given the title of manager. Companies need to know that they can trust you. Can they trust you to manage people and large projects? The stereotype in the world today is that a person with an IT degree will manage people better than someone without a degree.
Many employers do not respect programmers without a degree. They know that you are a computer geek, but they think that is all that you can handle. Your leadership skills are going to have to come from somewhere. If you think that a company will not give you a low ball offer for a job, you are wrong. The world of programming is growing. Many people cannot code properly that are in the field today because they are trained so poorly. It is a lot easier for you to learn coding at a 4 year college or university. Your degree program will help you to understand that programming takes time to learn and perfect. You also want to let your employer know that you are dedicated to your work. If you have a master’s degree, then it’s even better. No one is saying that you have to be Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. However, you are going to have to prove to your employer at some point that you can lead and manage. If not, you will be stuck in the same dead end job for many years. Possibly a lifetime.
It is true that a programmers experience matters. The more that you know, the more you will get paid. However, sometimes having knowledge is not enough. If you are going against a guy with the same amount of experience and a college degree, most likely the company will choose the guy with the degree. It is because it looks much more professional and it shows that you have dedication to the IT field.
Technology today is not what it used to be. In the past, all that you had to do was tell someone that you had knowledge about IT and then you would get a job right away. In today’s world, it’s not enough. Americans are competing with employees in India and China. Places like Elance, Rent a Coder and Freelancer are connecting companies from all over the world with IT businesses in overseas companies. Programmers from anywhere in the world can bid on projects with American companies. They often only charge $10.00 an hour. It may seem unfair when most American programmers need to earn around $30.00 an hour. Depending on how good you are, there is a lot of competition out there today. You want to try and be the best that you can be and work for companies that are going to employee you for what you are worth.
In order to become a good programmer, it takes practice. Some programmers are great only after a year in the industry. Others take five years or longer. The more time that you put into it, the more that you will get out of it. The proof is in the pudding. What can you do? How skilled are you really?
Ask yourself what type of a programmer you want to be? Do you want to work on websites, robots or iPhones? There are so many different areas in programming that you can work in. Always go for what interests you and not for how much you can get paid. You must enjoy what you do and your performance will prove as to what you are good at.
Salaries vary for a computer programmer. Some people earn only $30,000 a year and others earn well over $150,000 a year. Programmers that build complex websites will actually earn more money than someone that just works with html and design. This is because you need to know different types of programming languages and actually do coding.
Many programmers work in teams. It is a whole lot easier to do this because you may be good with a programming language such as Java and yet you may be weak in PHP. Therefore, you can team up with someone that can do the PHP code while you work on Java.
If you have no idea what you are doing in programming, then you must start with the basics. The first language that any programmer has to know is Html. It is the basic programming language. First start here and then you can get into popular languages.
On a funny note, please don’t tell people that you are learning your language in English if they ask you what programing language you are working on. Make sure that you tell them that you are studying HTMl or whatever language you are studying or else you might get laughed at.
