Are you planning a vacation to Georgia’s St. Simons Island and want to take Fido along with you? Well you are in luck because there are several St. Simons Island beaches that allow pets on the sand. Here’s a quick rundown on a few of the best ones:
1. Gould’s Inlet
Gould’s Inlet is a superlative beach to take your pet because of its dog-friendly amenities. It is located at the far end of Bruce Drive. The beach area features a pooper scooper station as well as communal water dish where your pet can rehydrate. There are also benches and a water hose should you want to hose off the sand before heading back home. Admission is gratis and its open year-round, 24-hours a day.
2. U.S. Coast Guard Station
The U.S. Coast Guard Station on First Street is one of my favorite pet-friendly areas because it has water hoses, public restrooms, plenty of shade and a concession station where you can grab an icy cold drink. If you’re also a naval history bluff, you may want to visit the Maritime Museum while you’re there. You’ll have to leave the dog home though if you do.
3. Gascoigne Bluff
Gascoigne Bluff is located on Arthur J. Moore Drive. Pets are allowed on premise and there is a public restroom onsite where you may refill your pet’s water dish. A picnic area and barbecue grills are available as well. If you get tired of walking on the beach, there is a lovely, paved fitness trail onsite that offers lots of shade and benches for a quick respite. There is no charge to access the park and it’s open continuously throughout the year. The only downside is that special events are held at the bluff often, so it can get a bit crowded at times.
4. St. Simons Island Pier
The St. Simons Island Pier is another great beach area to take your family’s four-legged members. It is located on Mallery Street and access is complimentary. There are water hoses available on the fishing pier as well as lots of shops and benches nearby. In my experience, it is also one of the best places to whale watch in the winter and early spring.
5. Massengale Park
Massengale Park is located on Ocean Boulevard and offers outdoor showers, public restrooms and plenty of shade. There is no access fee charged and the park traditionally opens daily from 6 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. You may opt to fill up your pet’s water dish at either one of the outdoor shower areas or at the public restroom area. Barbecue grills and picnic tables are also onsite if you want to make a day of it.
