Bible verses to celebrate Easter must be full of emotion. All four gospels have the Easter story, but the Easter verses that touch me the most are found in the book of John. Both verses involve Mary Magdalene, and I wonder how I might have felt if I were her.
“Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.” This bible verse helps me to celebrate Easter. I love Easter Sunrise Services. Something special happens to me. I stand in the dark and look around, envisioning what Mary saw as she trekked the pathway to the tomb. I breathe deeply, inhaling all the spring scents like flowers, grasses, and damp earth from the fog that hasn’t yet lifted. As I get closer to the tomb, the sky gets brighter. I can make out the rough rocks. The trees branches bend low with blossoms and move ever so slightly with the soft breeze. I think I hear footsteps behind me and turn to see nothing. My heart pounds faster as I wonder what I will find. I know a giant stone covers the entryway. Will I be able to get inside the tomb, to tend to the body of Jesus? It’s my duty, my desire to prep his body for eternal rest. Finally, it’s light enough, and I’m close enough to see the grave site, and the giant stone has been rolled away.
“Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” I love reading from my Bible and all of God’s words touch me, but a few verses give me goose pimples every time I read them or hear them read, this is one of them. Again, Jesus is speaking to Mary Magdalene.
I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God. I feel Jesus is talking directly to me. He is returning to my Father, my God. It gives me hope and the promise that we all find in Easter, a new beginning, a shining future. I always pause and Praise God for this verse. It makes me feel alive, and happy. It gives me comfort knowing that when my time here on earth is completed, I will be like Jesus, and I’ll say “I’m returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.”
Easter services are the most attended services of the year. I hope you find a service to attend, so that God may touch your heart and you may find Bible verses to help you celebrate Easter. This would be a great year to go to a sunrise service, and think as Mary thought. I pray these Easter verses will touch you as much as they’ve touched me.
