Blacklight: Retribution may just be the holy grail of free to play (F2P) first person shooters (FPS), think of it as the Call of Duty of the F2P market, but this is not just another copy & paste game to cash in on the success of recent FPS games. To give you a quick idea of the game world blacklight is set in a future where seeing through walls, and giant mechanized walking war machines are commonplace. Blacklight: Retribution has some stunning graphics and solid gameplay if you’re looking for something to play you can’t go wrong with this.
Now first off to call Blacklight: Retribution the Call of Duty F2P may be a little misleading, while the game modes are identical (Yes, even kill confirmed) to the triple A title, the game’s mechanics keep things fresh. With that let me mention the Hyper Reality Visor or HRV which is a tactical view of the in-game battle field in the first person sense of it. While HRV may not be new to the series it really changes up tactics when you enemy sees & knows exactly where you are at almost all the time, it gives the game a real sense of a war zone in that nowhere is safe. To make that war zone even less safe the game also has Hardsuits, giant walking tanks with the firepower to match, toting a minigun, and a railgun. Hardsuits along with other useful things can be purchased from the Weapon Depots scattered throughout each map, these weapons & items are purchased with Combat Points which are earned from killing players as well as other beneficial actions for your team.
Let me mention one of the biggest features of Blacklight: Retribution the weapons & armor system, so most games you pick from a few premade weapons and armor and head to war, while you could do that in blacklight, why do that when you can customize & modify each piece of your weapons & gear? Not hitting that target down sight? Slap on a new muzzle to reduce recoil & spread and then give it a go! My money is on you putting a few holes in them. Now that all applies to the armor system too, getting put down by a head shots too often? Trade in that old head gear for something with a little more bulk to reduce damage and increase your health, that’ll give the sniper a real surprise when you take a shot to the head and keep on sprinting to cover.
This is all building up to what sounds like a pretty awesome game right? So you’re thinking “Free to Play? I’m sure this is all ruined by overpowered guns you can buy for $50 an instantly become a god” Well you’re wrong my friends! While yes you can purchase in-game items for real money (Hey, they gotta make a living!) it doesn’t throw off the game off balance, a newbie with starter weapons can still bring down a heavily modded veteran. Also let me mention that Blacklight: Retribution sports 9 maps of varied size so you wont get bored playing the same map over and over.
After hearing all that I’m sure many of you will be off to download this stellar F2P FPS and may even be racking up kills like a pro before you know it, and for those of you I wish you good gaming! However for the few off you not totally convinced its worth a try this last bit is especially for you. While it doesn’t break the mold a dish out something totally different it shouldn’t be ignored, with its unique mechanics, beautiful graphics, and blood pumping gameplay Blacklight: Retribution is a fun, quality game, worth to be in any gamer’s library, and the fact that it is totally free to play I really can’t find a reason why it wouldn’t be.
