I really enjoyed A Cat Named Squeeky. It was different than some of the other cat books that I have read where either the author or the cat went through something really traumatic. This is just a story about a cat that showed up and made itself at home. It is a lovely story about how an unlikely stray cat turned some non-pet owners into cat lovers. It is also unique that the writer/narrator is a man. Most of the other cat books I have read have been written by women. I really enjoyed A Cat Named Squeeky.
Plot: The plot for this cat’s story is simple. This story is about a stray cat that shows up in Vic Reskovic’s neighborhood. He classifies himself and his wife as people who like animals but have never been pet owners. They pet the cats and dogs in the neighborhood but never had one of their own until Squeeky shows up. Squeeky is named for the sound she made the first time that Vic had any interaction with her. Squeeky basically worms her way into the lives and hearts of the Reskovics, and lives happily with them for 19 years. This is her story along with Vic’s revelations about life, time, and cats. In this novel, he shows us the life of an extraordinary cat (aren’t they all?) with all her eccentric behaviors like drinking from the sink and sleeping on her blue shawl. He highlights all the things that make cat lovers love cats. He shows us how cats can worm their way into our hearts, and lives and how we are better humans because of it.
What I like about this book is that Squeeky’s life was not overly dramatic. She wasn’t injured at birth, and her people didn’t go through some dramatic experience. She was just a cat doing normal cat things. Throughout the book we see her go through normal cat problems and at the end of book normal cat aging. What is special about this book is that is shows how animals get to people, how and why we come to love them. The Reskovics weren’t animal rescuers or cat people but they became cat people thanks to Squeeky. That is what is beautiful about this book. If you ever wanted to understand why people love animals this is the book for you. Sometimes the love of a pet can open whole new worlds for us.
It is written very well. It is an easy read and the story is organized very well in chronological order. Vic has a good voice and gives us good descriptions about the life of Squeeky so we feel that we are actually there enjoying the antics of Squeeky. Ever so often, he interjects his thoughts about life, cats, and the passage of time but its never intrusive to the story. This book is rather short at 167 pages but it was for me a touching, enjoyable read.
A Cat Named Squeeky is a lovely book about a cat that turned two non-pet people into cat people who truly loved her. Come and get to know Squeeky and all the wonderful cat things about her life. It is a lovely journey that all cat lovers will enjoy reading about.
