Bristol Palin had to be thrilled when Barack Obama endorsed gay marriage – it provided her with the perfect ploy to get her new reality show a little free publicity. All the daughter of Sarah Palin had to do was post a ridiculous rant on her blog to get everyone all riled up and talking about her again.
Apparently Bristol doesn’t think that President Obama wasn’t being a good dad by talking to his daughters Sasha and Malia about gay marriage. The President mentioned his wife and daughters as three of the many people he talked to about the issue before announcing his support for same sex marriage, and Bristol responded by writing this about his decision to include his daughters in the discussion:
“While it’s great to listen to your kids’ ideas, there’s also a time when dads simply need to be dads. In this case, it would’ve been helpful for him to explain to Malia and Sasha that while her friends parents are no doubt lovely people, that’s not a reason to change thousands of years of thinking about marriage.”
For thousands of years people were fine living without toilets, running water, electricity, and modern medicine. So maybe mankind shouldn’t have evolved and learned to make life better with science and technology, either.
Bristol rambled on by writing, “As great as her friends may be – we know that in general kids do better growing up in a mother/father home. Ideally, fathers help shape their kids’ worldview.”
So Bristol is endorsing traditional marriage where a man and a woman get married and then have a child that they raise together, while she had a baby out of wedlock and is now a single mom — she’s basically admitting that she thinks that she’s no better than the gay couples that she’s bashing. So she’s not only insulting same-sex couples and herself, but also all single parents. And even if she lets Tripp’s father Levi Johnston shape his worldview, the poor kid is screwed – after all, he’s the son of a man who thinks that naming his daughter after a gun is a good idea.
And as psychologist psychologist Abbie Goldberg points out, lesbian and gay parents rarely become parents by accident, which “translates to greater commitment on average and more involvement.”
Perhaps Bristol’s stance shouldn’t be all that surprising since she has a history of being a hypocrite — she made over $300,000 as abstinence ambassador who encouraged teens not to have sex and accidentally get knocked up like she did.
Adding a hypocritical comment to her blog for people to pounce on wasn’t enough — Bristol just had to throw a pop culture reference in her rant to really get the attention of the press. She wrote that “it would’ve been nice if the President would’ve been an actual leader and helped shape their thoughts instead of merely reflecting what many teenagers think after one too many episodes of ‘Glee.'”
So if Bristol thinks that “Glee” influences teens’ thoughts on gay marriage, perhaps she got knocked up after watching “Juno” (yes, a “16 and Pregnant” joke would have been better, but it wasn’t on TV when Bristol got pregnant).
But don’t worry too much about Bristol’s non-traditional family putting her on the same level as same-sex couples – she just might find a new dad for little Tripp. Her upcoming Lifetime reality show “Bristol Palin: Life’s a Tripp” allegedly features her and her boyfriend Gino Paoletti going through a “trial marriage.” Or as Mama Grizzly might call it, “living in sin.”
So what do you think of Bristol’s rant?
