Butterfly releases have become a popular tradition these days. Many weddings revolve around this theme. I chose to release butterflies for my daughter’s baby shower.
Why would you choose to release butterflies for special events?
I came across this Native American legend that reads:
“If any one desires a wish to come true they must first capture a butterfly and whisper the wish to it. Since the butterfly can make no sound, it can not reveal the wish to any one but the Great Spirit who sees and hear all.
In gratitude for giving the beautiful butterfly its freedom, the Great Spirit will always grant the wish.
So, according to legend, by making a wish and giving the butterfly its freedom, the wish will be taken to the heavens to be granted”.
I felt butterflies are symbols of freedom and change, and they are so beautiful.
One day my daughter was a wee baby and I held her tight to my bosom. Now she is going to be a mommy and I wanted to celebrate that.

Many weddings choose to release butterflies in the open instead of scattering rice, confetti or flower petals. Some churches or reception halls do not like the mess or allow it. Besides, it is another clean up job to do after a big party. On the other hand the butterfly release is a more ecological and green option.
It is quite magical when the box is opened and the butterflies stretch their wings. Some butterflies were a bit shy in the beginning we thought. Actually they were hibernating, still sleepy in the cold, dark box and they took a little extra time
With the warmth of the sun and the open sky they woke up and then they sat on flowers. A child commented that the butterflies are kissing the petals. This was quite interesting coming from a five year old little one and every one got busy taking pictures.
They make great pictures and videos as well.
What you need to know after the box arrives:
I ordered the butterflies way ahead of time. Just one day before the event I was informed via e mail that the butterflies are shipped by Fed Ex and the tracking number was given. Therefore I was ready and knew exactly when to expect them. I ordered the mass release option. So they were all in one box.
The butterflies come in a small box surrounded by some kind of blue ice that will keep the box cool for extended period of time. I was supposed to keep it in cold environment like a refrigerator until it is ready to be released. But I did not read that at that time.
To be honest, I wanted it to be a surprise and I did not have room in my refrigerator. So I kept the whole box in a cold, dark room unopened. The butterflies did fine.
It was a wonderful experience and every one enjoyed it. My daughter was quite moved. I think releasing butterflies was a great thing and very much worth the expense.
