For me, calming nervousness is best handled in a natural way. I can’t very well be a mom of eight and expect to navigate through my day on sedatives to help me stay calm. I’ve been through a lot of trial and error regarding this issue over the years of births, deaths, communions to plan, baptisms, and lots of holiday preparation. Often, I needed to use a natural substance to calm my nervousness so I could get through the event. A few of the things I’ve used are listed below.
Calcium has always been a nice way for me to take the edge off of any nervousness that I was feeling in the middle of some sort of event that I needed to look my best for. I’ve used it to help me sleep and to keep my uptight muscles from being uptight. I’ve had a lot of success by getting through a school or family event after taking calcium. The nutritionist I see advises in taking the liquid form of calcium because of better nutritional uptake, and find that using the liquid calcium before bed helps me fall asleep much easier.
I tend to get lots of charlie horses at times when my minerals are deficient. At those times I also notice that I tend to become nervous more easily and do get a lot of help from magnesium. It seems to take the edge off of my nervousness so that I just feel a normal sense of calm. It won’t make you sleepy like a sedative, but it does make you feel “normal” and less tense. I find it works best when I take it with food because it is better absorbed according to my nutritionist.
This is by far one of my favorites for helping me calm down to get through a tough time. I can feel it begin to work about a half an hour after I take it. I feel less jittery in general and I am more able to focus with better mental clarity after I calm down. If I’ve had a particularly hard time with nervousness I find using this for a few days in a row, like during a bout of PMS before my menstrual cycle begins works best to prevent the nervousness before it starts.
For mild nervousness this is the way to go. Sipping chamomile after a day that produced a lot of stress causing nervousness is a nice way to avoid any sleeplessness before it begins. A couple cups of this before bed is sometimes all it takes for me to regain some tranquility before I retire for the night.
I find that the B complex vitamins taken as a general rule on a daily basis help to create a sense of calm within me that I carry daily. I notice the difference when I don’t take these and then get back to using them again. It’s a significant difference and worth spending the money to take them regularly.
