Can we recuperate from a slip?
When we are walking in and about our home, the place that we are most familiar with and know where everything is, would we expect to slip and fall? Amazingly, that is where most falls occur, in our very own homes. Could it be because we are so familiar with our surroundings that we are just not expecting it to happen? Is that why it catches us off guard? Once we have fallen, we become more cautious around that particular area of our home and often remove the obstacle, if any, that caused the fall, and take the precautionary measures we need to take, so that it does not happen again. For the most part, we quickly recuperate from this fall, dust ourselves off and get up again. However some of these falls may leave us in a state where the recuperation will take much longer. We may have been bruised by this fall in such a manner that we will need a lot more time and nurturing to bring ourselves back to the healthy state we were once in.
There is one particular member in our body that provokes a different kind of slip. It has been said about this member that not even one of mankind can get it tamed. It has been referred to in the bible as “an unruly injurious thing, which is full of death-dealing poison” (James 3:7-9).
I am almost certain, that by now, you may have already guessed, which member of the body I am referring to. If you guessed the tongue, you are correct.
How many times has a slip of the tongue, caused you to hurt yourself or someone else? Just like a fall can happen when our guard is down, the same thing can happen when we are around our loved ones, and when we get too comfortable. We may say something in the heat of the moment, without thinking, or giving it much thought, that may result in hurt.
Although we are not always able to tame it, we do have a great deal of control of its use. There is a saying that can protect us, if we apply it. “Think before you speak”, how many times have I told myself that, once the damage has already been done, unfortunately, wishing I could take back what I have said.
The slip of the tongue can truly get the best of us, and for those that are on the spotlight, more so. Many celebrities that we respect and admire are also familiar with this injurious member and consequently some have had to retract and/ or apologize for the statement(s) made that have offended others.
If you have slipped or have been hurt by someone else’s slip, let us remember that it is accidental and that for the most part, we don’t set out to hurt others or ourselves during the time of the slip. Let us try and remember that because of our imperfections, the intentions of the heart are not always in line with the tongue, and when these moments occur, whether you are at the receiving or giving end try and remember that a heartfelt and sincere apology can go a long way. It will not immediately heal the wound, but it can keep it from making it worse.
On that note, I would like to offer a public apology to any and all I have hurt with a slip, and may my apology be able to nurture the relationship(s) to where it once was.
