Are you in the process of creating a gift basket for your culinary minded family and friends? If so, you may want to consider creating a batch of measuring spoon dolls. Based on my experience, they make a welcome addition to any food focused gift basket and are a cinch to assemble. Here’s how to do it:
In order to complete this project, you will need a package of Velcro strips, a set of measuring spoons (metal or plastic), a package of fusible web, a bag of doll hair and 4.5 inch pieces of square fabric (one per spoon). You’ll also need a piece of flesh colored felt, a roll of gold cord, a package of fabric paint pens and a pair of scissors. In addition, access to a hot glue gun, clear glue sticks, a clothes iron and an ironing board are also necessary.
Prepare the Materials
Begin by fusing the webbing to each fabric square and the piece of felt. I have found that the best way to do that is to lay the fabric, wrong side up, onto a piece of scrap plywood. If you don’t have a piece of scrap plywood handy, remove the padded cover from your ironing board. Then place the fabric onto the metal surface.
Continue by laying the webbing, paper side up, on top of the fabric and the felt. Once that’s done, set your clothes iron on a high setting and run it over the paper firmly until the two materials are fused together. Depending on your iron’s temperature, the entire fusing process may take 5 minutes or less. Afterward, turn the iron off and let the web fused pieces cool down before proceeding.
Next, lay the measuring spoons out in front of you. At this point, you’ll need to design and cut a one-dimensional dress out of the fabric for each spoon. You’ll also need to draw and cut one-dimensional, felt heads for each spoon too. When you are done cutting, keep going by drawing a human face onto each felt head with the fabric paint pens. You’ll also want to glue some hair to the heads as well. Then set the heads aside until the glue and paint dries.
Assemble the Dolls
After the paint and glue has dried, continue by flipping the spoons over so that the back of each scoop is facing upward. Proceed by threading a piece of gold cord through the hole located in each spoon’s handle and use it to create a hanging loop.
Continue by attaching a piece of Velcro to the back of each dress and head. Next, affix two pieces of Velcro to the backside of each spoon’s handle exactly where you want the figure’s head and dress to go. When doing so, keep in mind that the spoons are meant to be hung by their handles. Therefore, the figure’s dress should be positioned towards the scoop end of the spoon. Once that’s done, connect the dresses and the heads to the backs of the spoons. Afterward, your measuring spoons will be ready for packaging.
I have found that are several great ways to package the spoons for gift basket use. For example, you could thread a ribbon through the spoons’ hanging loops and tie it into a big bow. Once that’s done, you could attach it to the gift basket’s handle with florist’s wire. If you don’t like how that looks, you could also opt to attach individual spoons to canning jars filled with homemade spice blends and drink mixes. Personally, I think that both methods look good.
