The next time you are peeling an orange or a grapefruit, don’t throw out those rinds. If handled in the right way, the peels may be transformed into charming, scented flower buds. Based on my experience, the flower buds smell great, look good and are easy to make. Here’s how to do it:
In order to complete this task, you will need a potato peeler or a sharp knife, a cookie sheet and some citrus fruits. Citrus fruits that may be used to create the scented flower buds are oranges, grapefruits, lemons and limes.
Collect the Peels
Begin by grabbing your knife or potato peeler. Then start at the top of the fruit and use your instrument of choice to create a long and continuous strip. If the strip eventually breaks, don’t despair. You can use the smaller pieces to make little rose buds. Keep going until the entire piece of citrus fruit has been peeled.
Form the Rose Buds
Proceed by using your hands to curl the citrus peels into tight spirals that resemble rose buds. Afterward, carefully turn your citrus peel roses upside down and place them onto a cookie sheet. Then place the cookie sheet into a warm, dry, well ventilated area of your home. Allow the citrus peels to sit in that area undisturbed until they dry out completely. In my experience, the entire drying process could take up to two weeks. Afterward, your citrus peel rose buds will be ready for use.
At this point, you may be thinking about how to put your citrus peel rose buds to use. For starters, you could opt to place them inside a decorative bowl and set it somewhere inside your home. As the peels sit in the bowl, they will give off a lovely citrus scent. You could also opt to strength the scent by adding a few drops of essential oil to the bowl as well. I would recommend that if you do decide to strength the citrus rose buds’ scent that you use essential oils that match the peels used in the rose buds creation. For example, if you used orange peels, you’ll want to use an orange essential oil.
If you don’t already have bottles of essential oils in your home, they are readily available for purchase through most major craft stores and botanical related shops. Prices for the essential oils will vary.
