Dallas Season Finale: Top Five J.R. Quotes

by pop tug

For the original 13 seasons, in addition to this year’s season on TNT, J.R. Ewing has always been a wordsmith in his own right. Over the years, there have been many memorable phrases spewed out by the brainy and brave oil man. Tonight’s episode didn’t disappoint Ewing fans. In addition to a recap of the season’s finale, I have compiled a list of five quotes from J.R. tonight. The quotes range in emotion, covering everything love, hatred and smugness.

  • “I love you, Bobby. And I don’t know who I’d be without you”
  • “You know you’ve hit a low when even a lawyer won’t take the time to insult you”
  • “Bobby wants us to both pay the piper”
  • “Life is cheap in prison, Desenta. And I’m a very rich person.”
  • “Now, that’s my son; from tip to tail.”

In addition to these great gems from J.R., a lot of other things took place on tonight’s summer finale.

The drama opens with the ending of last week’s cliff hanger. The previous episode ended with Rebecca and Tommy fighting over her gun. We watch Tommy fall to the ground, with a bullet in his chest. She immediately calls someone and says she needs help. Fans continue to watch her apartment cleaned up and the body removed, as if nothing had happened.

Annie’s ex-husband was blackmailing Sue Ellen, and when Sue Ellen confides in her, Annie once again takes matters into her own hands, ensuring that Sue Ellen, or any other member of her family, won’t be bothered by him. Sue Ellen continues her campaign for Governor of Texas.

John Ross proposes to Elena, with her saying yes. Just a few short hours later, the happy balloon was burst by John Ross when the truth spills out about his involvement with the illegal selling of South Fork.

Meanwhile, Christopher has hired John Ross’s private investigator to track down Rebecca’s brother Tommy. While in Tommy’s now empty hotel room, Christopher takes a phone call meant for Tommy. He discovers yet another bombshell about Rebecca. Not sure of even her name, he threatens to find out who she is really, and to take the babies from her when she is sent to prison for fraud.

Now that he is broken up with Rebecca, for good this time, he makes tracks over to Elena’s house and gives a teary-eyed account of how long he has loved her. For the second time in two days, Elena is proposed to by another Ewing. Lucky girl.

Cliff Barnes is about two seconds away from gaining Christopher’s energy rights, as well as South Fork, when the FBI shows up and arrests DeSenta for murder and fraud. J.R. and John Ross give statements in exchange for immunity, once again getting them off the hook.

The huge bombshell came about ten minutes before the end of the episode. Rebecca is in a hanger, a jet in the background. Tommy’s body is loaded into the cargo section of the jet. Rebecca is scolded by a man about the mess she has made, for steering off course. She apologizes, and he says she needs to save the apologizes for her father. The camera pans over to the stairs of the jet, and viewers can only see legs of a man for a few long seconds, the anticipation growing for the revelation of who Rebecca’s father was. I am sure I am not the only one that gasped when Cliff Barnes’ face was displayed. He tells her she is no different than her Aunt Pam when it comes to the Ewings.

The last few minutes of the show feature Sue Ellen’s campaign speech, Christopher and Elena resuming their relationship and John Ross and J.R. doing what they do best, discussing business.

John Ross is joined at the new Ewing Enterprises by J.R. in the last scene of the season. John Ross explains to his dad how that once he removes Christopher and Elena from the newly found business, he will bring J.R. in, but if he screws him over once more, John Ross vows to place him back in the nursing home. J.R. smiles, proud of his son. The camera pans back, away from the two Ewings, displaying a beautiful Dallas skyline. A few seconds later, the screens fades to black, then displays the words all fans have been dreading since the show’s premiere, “To Be Continued…”
