COMMENTARY | On Monday night, “Dancing with the Stars” drew tears from the audience and the judges. They all told emotional stories of the years that had an impact on their lives. The night again yielded high scores, with only five points separated first and last place. The close scores surely laid the path for a nerve-racking elimination night. Anyone could have been sent packing on Tuesday’s result show.
The show opened with Seal and a choir, returning to the ballroom floor with singing “Lean on Me.” The performance was a precursor to his tour that kicks off this summer. Len chimed in on Monday’s performance. He even said the producers should not send anyone home this week and roll it over until next week. He did not get his wish.
Roshon & Chelsie, Maria & Derek, Gavin & Karina and Katherine & Mark were the first four couples to stand before the audience. The first couple saved was Katherine & Mark. I couldn’t see them going home after their emotional dance. Maria & Derek were the next couple saved from elimination, followed by Roshon & Chelsie. For a second week, Gavin & Karina were in jeopardy.
The AT&T spotlight dance was performed by Anna and her husband Jonathan Roberts. They wanted to dance in tribute to their friend and fellow competitive ballroom dancer Julia Ivleva. She received the diagnosis that she has stage-four cancer. Despite her diagnosis and the fact that she can’t dance anymore, Julia still travels with her husband, a ballroom dancer. Anna & Jonathan wanted to pay tribute to her strength and courage.
The song chosen for DWTS Macy’s Design a Dance will be Beyonce’s “End of Time.” After they revealed this information, Gladys & Tristan, Jaleel & Kym, and William & Cheryl were the next results. William & Cheryl and Jaleel & Kym were safe, while Gladys & Tristan joined Gavin & Karina in jeopardy.
Brook Burke held an envelope with the name of the next couple saved. It was Sherri & Val. Tom Bergeron then revealed that, in the following weeks, the two couples at the bottom will have a dance off and the judges will reveal who goes home. This season has provided so many good performances that the producers may have changed the format of the show a little.
The first Macy’s Stars of Dance performance was energetic and like a tribute to a Bob Fosse Broadway performance. Then, Rascal Flatts performed a song from their latest album, “Changed.” Like Seal, Rascal Flatts goes on tour this summer. They are friends with competitor Gavin DeGraw.
The final three couples up were Donald & Peta, Jack & Anna, and Melissa & Maks. Donald & Peta and Melissa & Maks were safe. Jack & Anna joined Gladys & Tristan and Gavin & Karina at the end of the show. Gladys & Tristan would dance another week, so Gavin & Karina and Jack & Anna were definitely in the bottom two. Jack & Anna went home, meaning Gavin & Karina were again saved by the audience.
Tom Bergeron said it right. This season has produced the best group of celebrities ever, so each week, it’s going to heart to see one of them go home. At least Jack got to dance for his daughter before going home. Next week, they will have to find their inner rock star on DWTS. More than likely, audiences will have to say goodbye to another favorite couple.
