Do you have a friend that is expecting a baby? Are you in charge of decorating for her impending baby shower? If so, you may want to think about making diaper pin garland. Based on my experience, diaper pin garland is practical, creative and fun to put together. It consists of a series of diaper pins, ribbons and other items that the mom-to-be may find useful. Here’s how to put one together:
In order to make diaper pin garland, you will need a large amount of diaper pins, beads, ribbons, baby pacifiers and baby socks. It is also handy to have baby washcloths, floral wire and floral tape on hand.
Prepare the Materials
Begin the project by making a series of roses out of baby socks and baby wash cloths. If you have never made them before, there are a variety of instructional videos and articles online that will walk you through it. One such video is “Carolyn Braden TOIE: How to Make Baby Sock Roses!” You can find it on YouTube. Once you have the baby sock roses and baby wash cloth roses complete, temporarily set them aside.
Make a Diaper Pin Chain
Next, grab four diaper pins. One diaper pin should be positioned horizontally. Take the other three diaper pins and open them up. Add a few pink, blue and yellow beads to each one. Then attach the bead covered pins perpendicularly to the horizontal diaper pin. Next, grab a fifth diaper pin and run it through the holes on the beaded diaper pins. When you are done you should have a shape that resembles a horse fence. Continue by beading and attaching three more diaper pins to one of the horizontal pins. Keep going until you have an entire chain of diaper pins.
Attach the Embellishments
Proceed by attaching the baby pacifiers, baby sock roses and baby wash cloth roses to the chain of diaper pins. I would recommend using pastel colored ribbons and florist’s wire to attach the items. When you are done attaching those items, your diaper pin garland will be ready for use.
At this point, you may be wondering if there are any other ways to use your diaper pin garlands besides hanging them up. Personally, I have found that small diaper pin garlands look great when wrapped around cloth baby diaper cakes. You may even want to make diaper pin necklaces and bracelets for the mom-to-be and the other guests to wear. Just don’t use the baby wash cloth roses for those items because they tend to be too big and bulky.
