If Hollywood does a remake of “Wedding Crashers,” Taylor Swift should get top dibs on the lead.
A story has spread since last weekend the country singer attended a wedding with her Kennedy family boyfriend even though she was not invited — and then refused to leave after being asked twice.
Yesterday, “Today Show” co-host Kathie Lee Gifford confirmed the story was true, and she’s in a good position to know. The bride was her step-granddaughter.
According to published reports, the bride’s mother Victoria Gifford Kennedy was aghast when the “Never Grow Up” singer popped in for the nuptials with her new beau Conor Kennedy. “I personally went up to Ms. Swift, whose entrance distracted the entire event, politely introduced myself to her, and asked her as nicely as I could to leave. It was like talking to a ghost. She seemed to look right past me,” said the daughter of football legend Frank Gifford and widow of the nephew of President John F. Kennedy.
A spokeswoman for Swift painted a different picture. “There is no truth to that. Taylor was invited to the wedding and the bride thanked her profusely for being there,” said Paula Erickson.
The rep’s statement contradicts the bride’s mother’s contention that her nephew Conor Kennedy was invited solo to the posh affair but had failed to RSVP. The high-schooler waited until the actual wedding day to send her a text message he was going to attend and wanted to bring the country cutie as his plus-one.
Using her TV show as a platform to set the record straight, Kathie Lee backed up her step-daughter’s version of the story. She told co-host Hoda Kotb, “The truth, because I was there, [is that] Vicki’s account of what happened in Boston is accurate.”
After hearing the latest gossip, Kotb sympathized with the bride. “When Taylor Swift walks into your wedding, she gets all the attention and you’re chopped liver,” said the author of “Hoda: How I Survived War Zones, Bad Hair, Cancer, and Kathie Lee.”
That could be what happened. Some reports of the wedding hinted that guests asked the country diva for autographs and wanted to pose for pictures with her.
The Kennedys are no stranger to celebrity hangers-on, however, with such legends as Marilyn Monroe and Arnold Schwarzenegger linked to the clan. If Swift’s presence at a Kennedy affair could cause such a stir, it makes you wonder what effect a star’s presence would have at a mere commoner’s wedding.
