Dippity glass flowers add a touch of stained glass to any area. The colorful petals are combined together to create a variety of homemade flowers ready for home decorating projects. The size of the flower is limited to the size of the dippity glass container and the ability to submerge the petal completely in the liquid plastic.
Things You’ll Need:
18 to 20 gauge wire
Needle nose pliers
Dip It Solution Type A, Type B or Type C
Dip It Thinner, also known as acetone
Dip it Strengthener
Stamen, if desired
Step 1 – Select a Dip It Solution to complete your first project. Type A Solution is very shiny and will look like plastic when dry. The addition of beads or gold dust to the surface will help to enhance the solution. It is the least expensive of the solutions. Type B has a wide variety of colors and creates a finished project that looks like stained glass. Type C is the most expensive but creates the best stained glass appearance. Type C will have to be thinned for easy dipping.
Step 2 – Shape the first flower petal from either 18 or 20 gauge wire. For example, cut a length of wire 12-inches long. Curl one end of the wire toward the center of the 12-inch length and create a circle. Twist the point around the center of the wire to create a complete circle. The circle is the portion of the flower petal that will hold the dippity glass. Repeat the process to create the desired number of petals.
Step 3 – Open the Dip It Solution and stir it with a craft stick. Pull the craft stick straight up from the Dip It glass. Watch the Dip it Solution drip off the end of the stick. The proper consistency should be like thick cream. If it is too thick, add a small amount of thinner at a time and stir. Repeat the process until the Dip It Solution is the proper consistency.
Step 4 – Dip the first petal in the Dip It Solution. Make sure the entire petal is submerged. Pull the petal out of the Dip It Solution so the edges of the petal do not touch the edges of the container. Hold the petal over the container and allow the excess Dip It Solution to drip into the container.
Step 5 – Insert the end of the flower petal in a piece of floral foam. This will allow the Dip It Solution to dry completely. Drying time will take up to 5 minutes. Repeat Step 4 and 5 until all petals are complete. It is important to keep the petals from touching to ensure a smooth surface of Dip It Solution on each petal.
Step 6 – Dip the petals for a second time in the Dip It Solution. Allow each petal to dry completely.
Step 7 – Dip each petal in the Strengthening Solution. Pull the petal from the solution and shake glitter, gold dust or glass beads onto the surface. The Strengthener will act like glue and hold the items in place. Place the petals in the floral foam to dry for a minimum of 15 minutes.
Step 8 – Group the petals together to form the desired flower. Twist the stem of each petal together to create the stem. Wrap the stem with floral tape to hide the individual pieces of wire.
Tip: Make leaves for each flower stem following the same instructions for making the petals for the flowers.
