Black Ace Disc Golf kicked off its 2012 season by hosting The Crusade, a Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) C-Tier Event, at the Holly Woods Disc Golf Course located within the Holly Recreation Area State Park on March 31. 47 amateur players from the Mid-Michigan and Southeastern Michigan area traveled to Holly, Mich., to compete in 6 different divisions of play. Black Ace Disc Golf in addition to running the disc golf event was also raising funds for the American Cancer Society.
Billy Montpas of Flint, Mich., won the Advanced Division by 4 strokes, shooting a 10-under 98 on the day. It was Montpas’ first victory on the year in PDGA sanctioned play. DJ Hunt of Lapeer, Mich., shot a tournament record of 6-under par in the second round of play to finish second with a 6-under par 102. Gary Chalice of Davison, Mich., came in third with a 5-under par 103.
In the Intermediate division, Nik Lehr of Davison, Mich., won with a 5 stroke lead, shooting a 7-under par 101. It was the second win in as many weeks for Lehr who also won the Intermediate division the weekend prior at the Michigan Spring Fling in Oxford, Mich. Eric Van Wormer of Holly, Mich., had a solid two rounds of play scoring a 2-under par 106 to earn second place and Brandon Redmond of Macomb, Mich., finished third with a 2-over par 106.
Patrick Franz of Milford won the Recreational division with a 1-over par 109. It is Franz’ first career win in PDGA sanctioned play. There was a three way tie for second place with Brent Moreno of Almont, Radwyn Sawer, and Scott Mazza of Shelby Township. Each disc golfer fired a 4-over par 112 on the day to finished deadlocked in second place.
In the Novice division, Shaun Moore seized the division with a 2-over par 110. Mike Flood of Oscoda, MI shot a 5-over par 113 to take second place and Jake Turner of Waterford, MI scored a 7-over par 115 to finish in third.
Jeremy Horton of Burton, MI continued his hot play; winning the highly contended Advanced Masters division with a score of 1-under par 107. Horton also finished first last week in the Advanced Masters division in the Michigan Spring Fling. The win was decided on the last hole of play, as Paul Holstein of Clarkston, MI came up short on his putt failing to force sudden death overtime and giving Horton his second consecutive win. Holstein shot even par on the day a 108 and was the Flint Town Flyerz Players Series Advanced Masters Champion in 2011. In third place Steve Brown of Davison, MI shot a 2-over par 110.
In the Advanced Grand Masters division it was Eddie Ruiz of South Lyon scoring an even par 108 to secure the victory. It was Ruiz first win the in the Advanced Grand Masters division in PDGA Sanctioned play. Larry Lehr of Davison, MI shot a 3-over par to take second place and Roger Brundage of South Lyon, MI shot a 6-over par to finish in third.
Black Ace Disc Golf also awarded two berths for the Michigan State Championships Presented by Discraft. The berths were awarded to the two best scores on the day. With Billy Montpas already have winning a berth earlier on the season; DJ Hunt and Nik Lehr were awarded berths into the championship tournament. The Michigan State Championships is played every year in Ludington, Michigan on Labor Day Weekend and hosted by the Michigan Disc Golf Organization (MDGO). The MDGO is comprised of all of the disc golf entities in Michigan and works together to promote the sport of disc golf.
Black Ace Disc Golf is run by Mark Stephens of Flint, MI and Juan Alvarado of Fenton, MI. They will host their next event at the Holly Woods Disc Golf Course on July, 28th. The name of the event is Dragon’s Horde and it is also PDGA C-Tier event. They will be raising funds for the Fenton High School Biology Department in addition to the disc golf event. Pre-registration is suggested by the tournament director.
