Doesn’t it seem like the garage is the one place in our homes that quickly spirals out of control? I know that when I don’t have a place for something, it ends up in the garage. And without a plan for organization, it’s not long before any garage becomes a disaster area. But, it’s not hopeless. Here are ideas you can use to keep your own garage so neat you might even be able to park your car in it.
• Cabinets and Wall Systems
Garage storage and organization is big business these days. If you have the money to spend, you can purchase stylish storage cabinet and slat systems – designed just to keep everything neat and tidy. Cabinets get items up off the floor and stowed away; while slat systems allow you to hang items – big or small – out in the open where you can locate them quickly.
However, there are other less expensive alternatives. Wood storage crates can be recycled and turned in to an efficient wall storage unit. Old fashioned pegboard can still be purchased at your local home improvement center and they have a ton of hanging options to use with your pegboard.
• Rack Holders
If you don’t want to cover an entire wall with a cabinet or board unit, you can still opt for smaller grip-type tool holders as well as slide or magnetic racks. Install as much or as little as you need and you can get organized quickly.
• Small Item Organization
Small item organization doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive. Recycle glass jars to hold all different types of small items. Line jars up on a shelf or your workbench. Or you can nail the metal lids up and out of the way and twist the jars in to the lids to stash small pieces. Don’t forget to add a bit of chalkboard paint to the front of your jars so you can also label the contents.
Here’s another easy way to organize pencils, markers and small tools. Take the head from a stiff bristle push broom, turn it bristle side up and push items in to keep them upright and easy-to-find. The list of items you can store this way is just about endless.
Plastic tubs are great storage containers, but they’re only as organized as you arrange them. But, don’t stack them too high or deep or you won’t be able to retrieve items without having to shuffle them around. Slip them in to open shelves for easy access.
• Look Up
When you’re looking for ways to get items up and off the floor to organize your garage, don’t forget to look up. Running a shelf around the perimeter of your garage is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of that unused space and it’s a great place to store items you don’t need on a frequent basis. You can even create or purchase overhead systems designed utilize ceiling space to create additional storage capacity in your garage.
