Two identical embroidery hoops
Two pieces of cloth
Cardboard or poster board
Photos or postcards
Not every photo you get has to go into a scrapbook. Scrapbooks are nice, and it’s a lot of fun to make them, but you might want to leave a few of them out for a different project. An embroidery hoop photo wheel is an intriguing way to display pictures on the coffee table. A guest can roll the wheel and see various photos, postcards, or other images. You’re going to adore this easy but stunning project.
You’ll need two embroidery hoops that are identical. Since the hoops are available in many different sizes you’ll be able to make a photo wheel that fits your lifestyle. Choose to make a huge photo wheel, or a very small one, depending on the embroidery hoops that you use. If you have no hoops already, you can purchase them at a craft store they are not expensive. In addition to the two hoops you’ll need thin card board or poster board.
It’s not hard to “build” the photo wheel. Cut a long, wide piece of cardboard; it might be necessary to cut more than one piece, and tape them together, end-to-end. The length of the cardboard should be such that it can wrap all the way around one embroidery hoop. The width should be slightly wider than the photos or postcards that you will feature.
Put a piece of cloth in each embroidery hoop to instantly give it a theme or a punch of color. Then, wrap one long end of the cardboard around one embroidery hoop and tape the ends together. Slide the second hoop into the other side of the cardboard and tape the ends together. You should now have a cylinder shape, with the embroidery hoops on the ends of the cylinder.
It’s up to you if you want to paint or cover the cardboard with fabric or decorative paper. When the cardboard or poster board looks like you want it to begin adding photos or postcards. Glue them to the cardboard, all the way around, leaving strips of space between each set of pictures. If you want, come back again, and put cellophane or acetate sheets over the photos to protect them.
Set the photo wheel on a table and have fun with guests. They’ll love rolling the Ferris wheel-type display, featuring pictures of your vacation, your kids, or even famous places around the world. The rolling picture display is a cute way to show off some of your favorite images, and to use up a couple of those otherwise-useless embroidery hoops.
