What You’ll Need:
Styrofoam or foam board
Choice of material, like paint or scrapbook paper
Glue dots or double-sided tape
The bed is usually the focal point in any bedroom so the headboard is very important. When visitors come over, and if they have to pass by your room, it’s nice to know that you can make a statement for all to see. Whether that headboard is a wooden one, a tile one, or another, you can make it yourself. You’ll save money, have exactly what you want, and own bragging rights when it comes to showing it off. You’ll really get excited about a headboard that looks like bricks, but really isn’t. A fake brick headboard is lightweight and colorful attention-getting.
There was a time when brick was reddish-brown. Now, bricks come in a huge variety of colors. You can choose to duplicate the look of real bricks on the headboard or make more colorful bricks of your own design. The fake bricks look much like the real thing when you use Styrofoam or foam board. Foam board usually has to be cut but Styrofoam can be found in assorted sizes of slabs – even small ones – and that makes it perfect for creating the fake bricks.
You don’t necessarily have to buy or cut foam to be the exact size of a traditional brick. When you cut the foam to be the length and width of a brick, but only half the thickness, you’ll save on Styrofoam and still create a brick look. To make it easy on yourself, purchase the thickness of Styrofoam that you want, and cut or buy shapes that are approximate eight inches by four inches.
One way to make the fake bricks look real is to simply paint them with a brick color – like brick red. Acrylic paints won’t melt Styrofoam like some paints do, and they’re available in many colors. But a much better way to create a brick look is to use peel-n-stick, vinyl floor covering. The thin tiles, when cut to the shapes of bricks, stick well to the Styrofoam. Brick-theme scrapbook paper – glued onto the Styrofoam bricks – is another choice.
Don’t worry so much if every brick doesn’t look perfect; that will be part of the headboard’s charm. Mount the bricks vertically, or horizontally, depending on the design that you want. Double-sided tape or glue dots work well to hold the bricks to most any other surface.
The fake brick headboard can look like bricks or can be a more colorful arrangement. Paint bricks various colors, or combine different types of floor covering, to create just the eye-catching design that you want. The finished headboard truly makes a bold statement in any bedroom.
