Draft season is well underway and if your like me you are searching far and wide for late round picks that can make or break your Fantasy Football Season.
These are some of my late round RB sleepers:
#1) Kevin Smith – DET RB – The Lions were hurting for RB depth last season and once Javid Best was injured they signed Smith from the checkout line at the local grocery store to handle the load. Smith is a talented back that has had trouble staying on the field. Best is still having post concussion issues 7 months after he was injured. I would not count on him returning anytime soon. That leaves a void in the Lions backfield that Smith seems perfectly suited to fill. Indications out of Detroit are that Smith appears to have the inside track to start and get plenty of touches. He gets a + in PPR leagues as he catches the ball well out of the backfield. Smith has a history of injuries. If he gets hurt Mikel Leshore would likely take over as the starter. I consider Leshore a deep sleeper with high upside. In my recent 10 team drafts I’ve been able to snag Smith between rounds 7-9.
#2) Ryan Williams: – RB AZ – The RB situation in AZ is muddled at the moment. Beanie Wells is the projected starter. He is coming off an injury and has not run well this preseason. With Wells history of injuries grabbing the talented but inexperienced Williams is a gamble that could pay off big time. Grab him in the last few rounds of your draft and you may hit a homerun.
#3) Rashard Jennings – RB JAC – By all accounts Jennings is a very talented RB. He is currently behind MJD on the Jaguars depth chart BUT MJD is holding out at the moment. There is the potential that he will be traded or continue his holdout into the regular season. If either occur Jennings is an immediate RB2 with upside. Grab him sometime after the 7th round of a standard league draft and you may strike oil!
#4) Toby Gerhart – RB MIN – Toby filled in well for AP last season after he went down. Peterson has done a great job coming back from his injuries and is hoping to play in the season opener for MN. That said Gerhart has made the case for some carries and it seems likely that the Vikings will ease AP back in to the linup limiting his carries early in the season. For anyone that takes AP in the early rounds, handcuffing with Toby is a must.
#5) the Law Firm of Ben Jarvis Green & Ellis – RB CIN – Law Firm is not so much a sleeper as an underrated/value pick. Ellis is the unquestioned starter for Cincinnati. He is being looked at by drafters as a “ho hum” player often going after the 5th or 6th round in 10 team formats. He reminds me of how Freddy Jackson and Marshaun Lynch were undervalued in 2011. Don’t sleep on the Law Firm. This guy has the potential to be a low end RB1 in 2012. He can catch the rock as well so he gets a + for PPR leagues.
As always I welcome your comments or questions.
