The old saying “you are what you eat” has never been truer. The Western diet has become a diet of golden arches, and hamburger royalty, as our meals expand and become more and more like something out of the Jetsons, it’s no wonder we are becoming a nation completely dependent on synthetic drugs, and large French fries.
Though the drug-like allure of fat and high fructose corn syrup is hard to avoid, there are ways to stick it to this multi billion dollar a year industry. Instead of pumping your children full of soda and artificial burgers, fill them with good home cooked healthy meals instead. As a typical American I like many other people once turned to McDonalds and Burger King to satisfy my nutritional need. Little did I know how toxic our relationship was, Even at eating only about 3 fast food meals a week I watched in horror as my waistline expanded and I lost any and all energy for the active lifestyle I once had.
Fast food has poisoned the nation. As a whole, the United States is quickly eating itself into disease and decay. According to the American Diabetes Association 1.9 million new cases of diabetes have been diagnosed since 2010, making a total of 25.8 million in the U.S with Diabetes, within this number is many of the nations youth, a problem we as a nation have never had to face. But as schedules fill up with school, work, piano lessons, homework, and endless hours of free time spent munching on potato chips, fried in oil so greasy you find yourself wiping your hand continuously on a napkin or the couch, and watching TV, life is lived from the couch with a controller more than ever before.
before you stuff your face with that McDonalds meal think about what you’re actually eating; and the empty calories you’re getting from it. The average McDonalds meal -a big Mac, large order of fries, a large Coke and a hot fudge Sunday for dessert – is pumping you full of 1250 calories-nearly all of your daily calories if you’re on a 2,000 calorie budget- leaving you only 750 calories for the rest of your day, (assuming of course you didn’t grab your usual 200 plus bagel and cream cheese breakfast with a light and sweet Starbucks creation loaded with syrups and sugars). To add insult to injury 450 of those calories are pure useless fat calories going right to your thighs, hips, butt, or any other problem area you have, Plus 97 grams of sugar. Still sound appetizing?
However all is not lost. By cutting fast food diets out entirely, or down to once or twice a year, we can stop feeling sluggish, tired, sick, and simply run down. Studies show a plant-based diet, free of fast food, cannot only stop the effects refined sugar and meat has had on our bodies, but reverse it. Studies by the Cleveland clinic have shown a plant-based diet to be the exact remedy needed to fix this nation.plant based diets offer all of the nutrients needed to sustain a healthy weight, cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure level, along with added energy, better mood, and a sexier waistline.
So instead of heading to the drive through and getting your “usual” meal why don’t you get a nice crisp green salad, or veggie burger instead? Your body, mind, and your wallet will thank you.
