The world premiere of the thriller “The Fields” was held at the Loemmle Music Hall, in Los Angeles and is now showing across the United States. I especially wanted to see Academy/ EMMY Award winner Cloris Leachman (Fox’s “Raising Hope”) starring in her role as Grandma Gladys.
After reviewing Cloris in films and on the stage for many years, this was an opportunity to see her latest work. Cloris could always portray any type of character and this showed her ability. Without all of the glamour of her previous roles, Cloris was simply a foul-mouthed grandmother living in the country. She was not made up to appear attractive; in fact, they wanted realism in underplaying her looks.
The sub -plot involved Bonnie (Tara Reid) and Barry (Faust Checho), as the parents of Steven (Joshua Ormond). Because their marital battles included physical abuse and an incident when Steven saw Barry pointing a rifle at Bonnie’s head, the couple decided to bring Steven to live with his grandparents.
“The Fields” was set in the Pennsylvania countryside, in the 70’s, the time of Charles Manson and his female disciples. Grandma Gladys enjoyed watching horror films on television and the news about the Manson family.
Influenced by watching television with Grandma Gladys, Steven began to worry about
Life on a farm was simple and uneventful until something suddenly changed and strange things began to happen.
A number of young hippy girls who looked like Mansion’s followers were acting suspiciously.
During one of the film’s exciting scenes, Steven stared at the fields seemingly trying to see what was beyond the tall stalks of corn. The fields were much taller than Steven and so thick that it seemed dark inside. After being warned not to enter the fields, of course just as most young boys, Steven suddenly began to run through the fields not really knowing which way to go. It took a great effort to finally arrive at a clearing where Steven found the body of a murdered girl. Even after telling Grandma Gladys, nobody believed him.l
Billed as a horror story, this is more like a suspense thriller with surprises for the audience.
The cast: Tara Reid (AMERICAN REUNION & AMERICAN PIE), Faust Checho
(Sundance hit ROBOT AND FRANK).
“The Fields” was written by Harrison Smith (SIX DEGREES OF HELL) and directed by Tom Mattera and David Mazzoni (cult favorite THE 4TH DIMENSION).
The film received awards at the Erie Film Festival (Best Directors, Best Actress for Leachman), Terror Film Festival (Best Feature, Best Actress for Leachman, Best Emerging Actor for Ormond), Philadelphia Terror Film Festival (Best Picture, Best Emerging Actor for Ormond, Sound Design, Score) and the Best Picture Award at the Buffalo Niagara Film Festival.
