Focus on Specific Roles in the Crystarium
Mastering the battle mode of Final Fantasy 13 is key to beating the game. You have to focus in the game on getting each character to truly master at least two battle roles. Once you have selected a primary role, you have to select a secondary role. Each character should really focus on developing these two roles in the Crystarium. If you can master certain roles in this game you are on your way to finishing the game
Game Roles
In the game Final Fantasy 13 you are given several roles your characters can choose from. These are roles that are put into effect under the paradigm menu; where you can focus on attack, defense or healing, etc. These roles consist of magical attacks (Ravager), physical attacks (Commando), or party defense (Sentinel), healing (Medic), or enhancements (Synergist), or weakening enemies (Saboteur). They are all important and should be developed.
Primary Roles
Having only a few party members that you can combine together at a time you really have to narrow their focus to a few roles. The best thing to do is to have each character specialize in one role, and give them a secondary role as well. If you make your characters masters of every ability, they will be weak indeed. You need to specialize in specific roles.
So I would have one character to be the main Commando for physical attacks, one character be the main Medic for the best healing, one be the best Ravager for powerful magical attacks, and one be the best Sentinel for defense, and further one be the best Synergist for enhancements, etc.
Secondary Roles
Of course you probably will need a secondary role, so that’s important too. The secondary roles are for other paradigms you put into effect during the battles. Say you need a Medic to be an attacker when everybody is in good condition. In that situation you’d have your healer do some attacking.
As an example, I have as my regular Medic, Vanilla who also will have the role of a Ravager to fight when everybody is in good condition. Or a Commando like Lightning becomes a Medic, when everybody’s life is threatened; she will switch from fighting to healing her party members.
Further my main Sentinel Snow will have a secondary role as a Ravager when his defense is not needed. So Lightning, Vanilla, and Snow all have two basic roles that I am developing to the maximum. You will have to do this with all your characters since sometimes you have to use the other ones.
So as a standard you always need to have one good Medic, a Sentinel, and of course one Commando and one Ravager. The other roles are very helpful but more optional. Synergists are very effective in the game and they will give you an edge.
So if you just follow some basic advice and develop two roles for each character in the game you will be on your way to mastering Final Fantasy 13.
