Finding Security Jobs: 4 Potential Places to Find Entry-Level Work

When looking for work outside their career field, job seekers often look for career paths that are relatively easy to transition into. For some, security jobs can be a viable alternative, especially if they have previous experience in security, military or a criminal justice. For those without this kind of background, there are still plenty of entry-level security jobs available to gain valuable experience.

Regardless of previous experience, those just starting to work in security, often have better luck searching for employment with companies that are typically not typically associated with security jobs.These places are often overlooked by the traditional job seeker are also more accepting of those with little or no experience. Some of these opportunities worth investigating include:

  1. Hospitals & Non-Profit Agencies: Hospitals and non-profits need security guards to provide surveillance, security, and emergency services for staff, volunteers, clients, and their families. Most, but not all, hospitals require previous security, criminal justice, or military experience. Prospective employees may also need training in CPR and/or non-violent crisis intervention.
  2. Recruitment Agencies: Many recruitment agencies often have positions for temporary and entry-level security positions. In fact, there are some companies that only hire workers these kind of positions For most entry-level positions, usually only a High School Diploma is required; however previous security, military criminal justice or weapons experience can be a plus.
  3. Web & Computer-Based Businesses: For those with computer experience and network security certifications, businesses that rely on computer networks and the Internet can be a source of job leads. Companies, such as PayPal and Amazon (as well as companies like hospitals and the government) need employees skilled in surveillance, management of company and consumer data. Most entry-level positions require education beyond high school, often a high school or Bachelor’s degree as well as certifications.
  4. Retail /Grocery Stores: Retail stores and grocery stores are often the most over-looked place when looking for security jobs; despite openings in Loss Prevention Agents and/or Loss Prevention Officers. These positions are often entry level and can provide a good starting point for even higher

The key to finding these job opportunities is “thinking outside the box”. Most job seekers only check in a limited number of places and limit their search to few career opportunities. By broadening your job search and your willingness to try other opportunities, you can often find opportunities (and a career path) that you had never considered!
