Whoever said that decorating your home is an expensive task clearly did not know what they were talking about. There are plenty of homes that can be decorated on a budget. All it takes is some advance planning and creativity. Below you will find five suggestions to help you get started.
1. Skip new and go straight to used
Have you ever heard the old saying one mans junk is another mans treasure? If you have then you probably already know where I’m going with this. That’s right its time to hit the streets and start looking at yard sales, and even driving around the neighborhood on bulk trash days. You may be surprised at what you find on the curb. Keep in mind that when it comes to finding the items you like it may take some time. Remember yard sales take place somewhere almost every weekend during the spring and summer months. Of course this can vary depending on where you live.
2. Ask around
Sometimes just letting people know you are looking for gently used furniture, can help you find some real gems. If someone is planning on remodeling their home, and getting rid of their furniture perhaps they will give it to you. If they indicate that they are selling it keep look, you are sure to find something gently used, and for the free price tag you are looking for.
3. Freshen up what you have
At first glance your furniture may look old and worn down. Upon a closer examination however you may discover that the items you have still have a pretty strong core. Old furniture can easily be given a new look just by sanding it down and repainting it. If your couch is ripped or torn try reupholstering it. If you are not sure how to do this, try a little research online. There are plenty of you tube videos that will walk you through the process
4. Unwanted paint
Do you have any family and friends who have just finished painting their home? Perhaps they have some paint left over that you may be able to use. Try not to be too picky about the paint color. Remember you are getting it for free so no complaining allowed.
5. Carpet scrap
Some friends and family may have just re-carpeted their home. Since more families are looking to carpet their home themselves they tend to overestimate how much carpet they will need. If they have scrap pieces you may be able to turn it into a runner for your home. A runner can add a fresh new look to any home.
