With a combination of pulling pranks, shrills, excitement and free candy it’s no surprise that Halloween is the favorite among holidays with young children. One of the best things about Halloween is getting to dress up and pretend to be something or someone else. If you can afford it, there are some great costumes that you can buy. Expensive store bought costumes aren’t your only, or even your best, option when it comes to a great Halloween costume. Some of the most creative costumes are handmade. If you are looking for a little inspiration for a great Halloween costume you should check out some of these options.
Zombie – With the popularity of a very cool zombie TV show, you can expect that zombies will be a huge hit this Halloween. Zombie costumes are great because there is a lot of options when it comes to what kind of zombie that you can be. Zombie brides, grooms, zombie cheerleader or football player, zombie business man, zombie cop and so on. To put together a zombie costume all you will need to do is pick out what kind of zombie you want to be and pick out an outfit that represents that. Lay the outfit out and slash and tear parts of it to make it look ragged. Stain and dirty the costume using things like coffee and fake blood. On the big night use costume makeup to apply gaping wounds and scrapes to your outfit. If you have long hair you can make it look matted by teasing it or clumping chunks together using pomade.
Mummy – Mummy is another classic costume that is a big hit when handmade. To make this costume you will need an old sheets or a couple of yards of white fabric, and an old shirt and pants. Tear the fabric into long strips, sew or hot glue the strips to the clothes. Stain the outfit with coffee! Don’t forget to leave some strands of the fabric dangling to give the appearance of unraveling. Save a few strips to add to the face. If you are making this costume for a child you should not cover their entire face with fabric.
Lady in White Ghost – For this scary costume you can use an old white flowing dress, a white nightgown , or a long white t shirt. I think the flowing dress makes the best costume. You can make the dress look tattered by tearing some small parts of it around the bottom. Wear white leggings to cover legs. Cover any showing skin with white costume makeup, add some dark makeup under the eyes and blend it for a sunken in look.
Zombie Hunter – With all the zombies that this Halloween is sure to bring, you may want to spend your Halloween with a zombie hunter. For this costume you will need an old shirt and pair of jeans, a long coat and one of those “bloody” fake weapons that you can buy at the dollar store or two fake pistols, and some kind of cool hat (Indiana Jones style). Combine all ingredients and splash on a little fake blood and wa la you have a zombie hunter.
Maybe you have found some inspiration in these ideas, but don’t stop there. The possibilities of types of homemade Halloween costumes are endless. Use your imagination and you can come up with something absolutely amazing. Start by thinking of some of your favorite costumes of all time, and think if I made this what could I use. Go from that point and start creating your Halloween costume. Some great things to be inspired by for your handmade Halloween costume would be your favorite movies, TV shows, food, music or places! Have a safe and happy Halloween.
