I’m a self-confessed girly girl. Give me lace, lipgloss and a pink cosmo and I’ll be high on life for an entire day. Among things I adore is also a flirty floral print, so you can probably imagine just how happy I am to see it’s on trend for spring and summer.
Like bold prints, such as animal or tribal, floral prints are sometimes tricky to pull off. If you’re wearing the print on a dress, skirt, blouse or other large garment, the key is to accessorize minimally around the colors/shapes of the print. Alternatively, you can use floral prints as, what I like to refer to them as, “accessorization pops.”
Let these four ways to wear floral inspire your outfits throughout this spring and sultry summer.
Pair with Nudes and Neutrals
As I mentioned before, wearing a large garment plastered with a pretty floral print means you should take a minimalist approach to the rest of your ensemble. One way to do this is to pair your floral garments with nudes or neutrals. For example, a beige, brown or white shoe (be it heel, wedge, flat or pump) matches with almost any floral print. To keep your look fresh and springy/summery, avoid darker hues, including black, navy and charcoal.
Combine Florals with Stripes
For a funky twist that’ll get you noticed, consider pairing a stripe with your floral print. You can do this in a subtle way by wearing a camisole with a striped border or a bangle with a striped design. Alternatively, try a geometric pattern or polka dot for a similar effect.
Keep it Super Subtle
Not a fan of the all-over-print? That’s definitely fair. If you still want to incorporate the trend in a more subtle way, though, try a shoe, bag, headband or piece of jewelry. To ensure the floral accessories match with the rest of your outfit, make sure at least one color from the print matches with your garment. Obviously, if your outfit is only one color, you don’t necessarily have to match exact shades. For example, a white or gray dress would pair well with blue, pink, yellow, green or even red-based floral earrings or bangle.
Floral Skirts and Camis
There’s nothing quite as wonderful as the warm sun gently beating down on your bare shoulders and neck throughout the warmer months. That’s probably why I have an affinity for spaghetti strap camisoles. Try pairing a solid-colored camisole with a floral print skirt and a neutral wedge for a laid back, easy breezy look. Keep hair up and off your neck to stay even cooler.
