There have been rumors running wild lately that Marvel Studios and Fox have been in discussions about a couple of superhero properties. Originally, word came that Fox was stressing because, if they don’t have a new “Daredevil” movie in front of cameras by October 10, rights revert to Marvel. Fox remains high that Joe Carnahan (“Narc”) has a great idea to make “Daredevil” into a Frank Miller influenced hardboiled thriller.
Fox needs more time for this and sources say Marvel brought something new to the table. The source claims that Marvel would afford Fox more time to make “Daredevil” if Fox returned the rights for Silver Surfer and Galactus to Marvel Studios. Both characters are part of the “Fantastic Four” franchise, which Josh Trank is currently rebooting. Insiders say Fox does not want to relinquish those rights.
Here is a look at what could happen, whichever way Marvel and Fox decide to go.
Fox Lets Daredevil Go
The Joe Carnahan idea for “Daredevil” sounds interesting and it is not mentioned whether this is a Fox owned idea or one that Carnahan brought to them. If it is Carnahan’s idea, there is a chance he could take his idea to Disney after it reverts back to Marvel.
There is also a chance that Marvel could package the Daredevil property with “The Punisher,” another character they regained the rights for. Those two characters live in a similar world, and in the comics, Marvel has always been one to love team-ups. A “Daredevil” and “Punisher” team-up movie could work well as a Marvel standalone film.
There is also a question of The Hand, the evil organization from the “Elektra” movie, which would also revert to Marvel as part of the “Daredevil” package. The Hand is also the villains in the story the “Wolverine” movie is based on. Who would hold the rights to The Hand, Marvel with “Elektra,” where they first appeared, or “X-Men,” since they are now appearing in “The Wolverine.”
Finally, keeping Silver Surfer might be a big deal for Fox, since they wanted to make a Surfer standalone movie since the character appeared in the second “Fantastic Four” movie. That is also when they ruined what is an iconic character in the comics with the depiction of Galactus. Surfer could also appear in a later “Fantastic Four” movie as well.
Fox Lets Silver Surfer Go
The first thing to understand here is that Carnahan would get to make his movie at Fox. The deal would be an extension, so Fox would want to get the film moving along. It is pretty obvious that Fox likes his idea, so that movie would get fast tracked.
Then, Marvel could move ahead with a Silver Surfer movie, starting with his origin tale with Galactus. With the upcoming “Guardians of the Galaxy,” it is clear Marvel is expanding their universe into the outreaches of space. “Thor: The Dark World” is also expected to take place off Earth.
Marvel could, arguably, be more respectful of the Surfer and Galactus source material. There is also a chance that Marvel could just offer to co-produce the “Daredevil” movie and leave everything at Fox. Time is running out and Fox needs to make a decision soon.
