Free Crochet Pattern for a Red Hooded Cape

by pop tug

Crocheting has been a wonderful stress reliever since I was a child. Over the years I have developed a love for the art of crocheting and have created many patterns along the way. For my daughter Sophia I created this beautiful hooded cape known as “Little Red Riding Hood.”

Size:

Cape measures 52″
Hat measures 20″ around face
Hat to bottom of cape measures 23″

Materials:

Size I hook
2 Skeins of red heart Cherry Red
1″ black button

Directions:

For ribbing, chain 8. Single in the 2nd chain of stitches you made. Then single crochet in each stitch across until you are at the end of the row. Turn. Chain 1, single in back loops only of each stitch across; turn. Repeat until row 126 has been reached.

Cape:

Row 1: Turn to work alongside of Ribbing, chain 1, single in each row end; turn – 126 stitches.

Row 2: Chain 3, dc in next 27 stitches, single in next 70 stitches, dc in last 28 stitches; turn.

Row 3 – 7: Repeat row 2.

Short Row A (Row 8): Chain 3, dc in next 25 stitches, half double crochet in next stitch, single in next stitch, slip stitch in next stitch; turn – 29 stitches.

Short Row B (Row 9): Skip slip stitch, single in next stitch, half double crochet in next stitch, dc in last 25 stitches: turn – 28 stitches.

Row 10: Chain 3, dc in next 24 stitches, half double crochet in next stitch, single in next stitch, single in same s t as slip stitch from Row 8, single in next 69 stitches, dc in last 28 stitches; turn – 126 stitches.

Row 11 & 12: Repeat rows 8-9

Row 13: Repeat row 10

Rows 14-19 – Repeat rows 8-13

Rows 20-21: Repeat row 2

Rows 22-27: Repeat rows 8-13

Rows 28-30: Repeat row 2

Rows 31-36: Repeat rows 8-13

Rows 37-40: Repeat row 2. Fasten off at end of Row 40.

Edging:

Chain 10 and single in each stitch around. When you reach the end of the row, turn, and single in the back loops only. Repeat until ribbing lines up with the measuring of the bottom of cape. Sew on evenly.

Button:

Chain 6 and single in each stitch around. When you reach the end of the row, turn and then single in back loops only. Repeat process until the ribbing measures 2″. Turn single in next stitch, chain 3, skip 3 stitches, single in last stitch; turn. Single crochet in each stitch across for 2 more rows. Cut off.

Sew edge for button on the cape on one side. On the other side sew button so that it nicely connects with the hole made. Tip: If you have any questions – pretty please post! Sometimes translating patterns can be difficult, and I wouldn’t mind helping you through the step-by-step guide!
