Fun Easter Crafts for the Frugal Family

by pop tug

Easter is right around the corner, falling on April 8th this year. If you are looking for fun, easy, and inexpensive Easter-related crafts to do with your kids, here are three just for you!

Craft #1: Small Easter Basket – Perfect to use as a candy holder!

Needed Supplies:
2 sheets of paper, preferably card stock
Glue (A glue stick will work best, but any glue will do.)
Scissors
1 print-out of each Easter Basket template (Basket and Strips)
Markers, Paint, or Stickers

Time Needed: About an hour.

Step 1: Print out one of each basket template, if you haven’t already. Cut out the corners along the lines, then cut along the straight lines, toward the inner rectangle. DO NOT CUT OUT THE RECTANGLE! The inner rectangle will be the bottom of your basket!

Step 2: Bend the attached strips toward the rectangle, making sure to do it straight, then flatten them back out. This will give you an even base to weave your strips through.

Step 3: Cut out the strips from the strip template.

Step 4: Place a small amount of glue on one end of your first strip, then glue it to one of the corner strips on the basket, laying the strip parallel and right next to the rectangle. You will then weave it in and out of the attached strips, all around the basket, raising each strip as you go. This will create the bottom row of weaving. You will need two strips to complete one row. Repeat with two more strips for the top row of weaving.

Step 5: Once you have the basket completed and the strips all glued together, you can make the handle. Using one of the extra strips, glue one end to the inside of one end of the basket, and the other end of the strip to the other end of the basket.

Step 6: Your basket is now complete! Time to decorate!

Craft #2: Tie-Dye Easter Egg Painting

Needed Supplies:
2 sheets of paper, preferably card stock
scissors
plastic wrap
paint, preferably in squeezable tubes

Time Needed: About 20 minutes.

Step 1: Print out one of my Easter egg templates, or draw your own egg on one sheet of the paper.

Step 2: Cut out the egg, but DON’T cut through the edges of the paper. This will serve as a “frame” around your egg. Set aside.

Step 3: On the other sheet of paper, drop random, small “blobs” of paint. Use multiple colors of paint.

Step 4: Once you have the desired amount of paint, take enough plastic wrap to cover the whole paper, AND have enough plastic on each side to hold. Place it flat on the paint. Use your hands to flatten out the paint “blobs”, squishing it around and making the colors run together. This will create the tie-dye look. Remove plastic.

Step 5: With the paint still wet, put the other sheet with the egg cutout on top. The paint will likely dry the two sheets together, but if the pages begin to pull apart, you can glue them together. If you like, you can decorate around the egg, perhaps writing your child’s name and the year.

Craft #3: Hand-print Tulips and Soda Bottle Flowers

Needed Supplies:
Paper
Skin-friendly paint
20-ounce soda bottle

Time Needed: About 10 minutes.

Step 1: Choose the colors you want for your flowers, and pour a little bit of the paint onto a work-appropriate surface. This is where you will dip your hands or the soda bottle.

Step 2: If you will be making hand-print tulips, dip your hand into the selected color of paint. To get a “tulip”-look, keep the fingers together when you put it onto the paper. Make the hand-print, then you can use your pinky to draw the stem and leaves, or just use a paint brush.

If you will be making the soda bottle flowers, dip the bottom of a soda bottle into the selected color of paint, then carefully place it onto the paper. To get the center of the flower, use the tip of your thumb. Again, to get the stem and leaves, use your pinky or a paint brush!

I hope that these fun and easy crafts will give you and your children much joy and great time together celebrating this wonderful holiday! Have a great Easter!
